On Sunday, Jan. 18, Pastor Jagadish Mishra prepared to lead a worship service at his home in Odisha, India, with his wife and their 8-year-old daughter.
With nearly 30 Christians present, a mob of 50 angry Hindu nationalists stormed into the pastor’s home and started brutally beating him. As Mishra fell to the ground, members of the mob repeatedly punched and kicked him. His face quickly swelled as a result.
As Mishra’s daughter wept loudly, pleading with the attackers to spare her father, his wife stretched her arms out over Mishra’s body, sustaining some of the blows meant for her husband.
“I thought they would kill me on that day,” Mishra said. “I lost all hope that I would survive.”
Following the attack, International Christian Concern (ICC) provided Mishra with emergency medical assistance and his family with food and other necessities.
“God did spare me and sent his servants from ICC to take care of me,” the pastor said. “I am so thankful for the provision and emergency help I received from ICC.”
Today, Mishra still feels weak as he works through the trauma of the attack. Despite his struggles, he said he is praying for those who attacked him.
“I felt they were so brutal, because they do not know Jesus,” he said. “They are addicted to alcohol and many other things. I have decided that I should continue to stay here and share Jesus with them, build a church in this place, and lead them in the way of righteousness.”
In addition to his attackers, Mishra asked those who hear his story to pray for his family and other local believers, who are boldly sharing the gospel.
“Please pray for our safety,” he added. “The radical Hindu nationalists know a lot about me. I am quite concerned about the safety of my family and the Christians in the area.”
During the last decade, ICC’s field staff has seen a dramatic increase in the number of attacks against Christians in India. The attacks are often fuelled by the establishment of anti-conversion laws in Odisha and elsewhere that are weaponized against Christians who share the gospel and lead Hindus to Christ.
As pastors continue to faithfully share the gospel with Hindus in India, ICC will come alongside them, helping them heal and equipping them to continue their work for God’s Kingdom.
“I want to thank ICC from the bottom of my heart for the generosity and concern towards my family and me,” Mishra said. “It brought warmth and full of life and hope, knowing that I am not alone. Thank you so much for visiting me and giving us groceries, clothes, and medicine. I cannot ask for more timely help than this. I am ever thankful for your prayers, love, and concern.”
