  • Ezra 2 and Nehemiah 7 record the same list of returning exiles with several differing family figures, while both give the same total of 42,360 (Ezra 2:64; Nehemiah 7:66).
  • Neither list was smoothed to match the other. A document produced to impress would have reconciled the columns.
  • The 153 fish (John 21:11) and the 276 aboard Paul’s ship (Acts 27:37) resist every interpretation anyone has offered, including Augustine’s.
  • Seven, forty, twelve and three carry meaning because the text builds it by repeated use. The rest count things, and that is not a gap.
