Sommario

  • Ephesians 6:1 and Colossians 3:20 speak to children directly, and in both letters the next verse tells fathers not to exasperate or embitter their children.
  • Jesus was indignant when his disciples rebuked the people bringing children to him, and he took the children in his arms and blessed them (Mark 10:14-16).
  • In Deuteronomy 6:7, “impress” translates the Hebrew shanan, to sharpen or whet, and the verse sets the teaching at home, on the road, at lying down and at getting up.
  • Timothy had known the Holy Scriptures from infancy (2 Timothy 3:15), and Paul says his faith first lived in his grandmother Lois and his mother Eunice.
  • The NIV reads John 3:16 as the Gospel writer’s comment, closing Jesus’ words to Nicodemus at verse 15; the ESV continues his speech into verse 16.

The Bible speaks to children directly, telling them to obey their parents and to listen to the teaching of their father and mother. Paul says so in Ephesians 6:1 and Colossians 3:20, and Proverbs opens with a father’s words to “my son” (1:8-9). Jesus said the kingdom of God belongs to “such as these” (Mark 10:14), and Deuteronomy 6:6-7 tells parents to impress God’s commands on their children at home and on the road.
