Prayers for Abundance: Money, Work, Health and a Grateful Heart

  • Short prayers ask for abundance in money and a steady home, relief from the fear of not having enough, the work of one’s hands, gratitude, generosity, wise use of money, health, love in the family, joy and hope, and patience while waiting.
  • In John 10:10 Jesus says he came that people “might have it more abundantly”; Luke 12:15 warns that life “consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth,” and Proverbs 30:8–9 asks for “neither poverty nor riches.”
  • Traditional prayers for plenty include the 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s “For Fruitful Seasons” and “For Plenty,” and the Orthodox Great Litany’s petition “for abundance of the fruits of the earth.”
  • The Lausanne Movement’s Theology Working Group called the teachings of the prosperity gospel’s strongest promoters “false and gravely distorting of the Bible.”
  • Christian prayer for plenty is addressed to God, not to a god of wealth or to the universe; Jesus said, “Ye cannot serve God and mammon” (Matthew 6:24).

In the Bible, abundance is God’s gift, and the prayer Jesus taught asks for bread one day at a time. A prayer for abundance in that spirit: “Father, everything I have comes from your hand.
