We’ll look at his inspiring journey of faith, see how it blesses his life and career, and understand a bit more about what this means for all of us, drawing from what’s been shared openly.

Is Andy Reid a Mormon? What is His Specific Religious Affiliation?

So, is Coach Andy Reid a Mormon? Yes, he is a valued member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.¹ You might hear folks call it the Mormon but the Church loves to use its full name to shine a light on its heart: Jesus Christ. So many good reports and Coach Reid’s own words tell us this is true.³

And isn’t it wonderful? Coach Reid doesn’t hide his light; he’s known for being so open about his faith!1 Throughout his amazing career, he’s shared his beliefs freely.⁴ By standing tall in his faith, especially in the bright lights of the NFL, he helps us all see that faith can be a beautiful part of anyone’s life, no matter how public. He shows us that your deepest beliefs can go hand-in-hand with great success and a public journey. What an inspiration!

How Did Andy Reid Become a Member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

How did Coach Reid find this path? Well, he wasn’t born into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; he chose this journey of faith.⁷ And it’s a beautiful story connected to his wonderful wife, Tammy. They met as students at Brigham Young University (BYU), a place filled with the spirit of the Church.⁸ Picture this: a simple tennis class brought them together!9

Tammy was already a member, and her loving family, especially her father, gently guided Andy to learn more. On a summer visit, Tammy’s dad, with a heart full of wisdom, encouraged Andy to explore the Church’s teachings to understand Tammy’s heart and values.⁹ Tammy remembers her father saying, ‘Andy, if you want to know what our daughter is all about, it’s our church and the gospel… why not learn from our missionaries and see if it’s for you?’.⁹ And Andy, with an open heart, said yes!

This time of discovery led him to a joyful baptism. He embraced this new faith even before asking Tammy to be his wife!7 He was baptized in August 1981, and they married that very same month!8 Isn’t that amazing? His faith journey began right alongside building his precious family. BYU, with its strong faith atmosphere, also helped him connect with the Church’s beautiful culture. It’s clear his faith became a rock for his life and family right from the start, just as the Church teaches about the importance of family and shared values.

How Important is Faith to Andy Reid and His Family?

For Coach Reid, faith isn’t just a Sunday thing—it’s everything! He often shares how his life is built on a foundation of faith.³ This precious belief is a gift he shares with Tammy, and it’s been their anchor, especially when storms have come.³

You can see their devotion in how they live. Even with his busy NFL schedule, Andy and Tammy make it a priority to go to church. Home or away, they’re there on Sundays. And if they can’t make it to a local service, they’ll sometimes have their own special sacrament meeting, with the blessing of local church leaders.¹⁰ Coach Reid himself said they are “never missing sacrament one way or another”.¹¹ Think about that dedication! It shows their faith is alive and active, a real part of their everyday lives.

They have five wonderful children 6, and though we don’t know all the details of each child’s path, you can just feel the atmosphere of faith their parents created. Their family’s spiritual bond is something they talk about when facing life’s complexities. Living their faith day by day shows just how incredibly important it is to them.

What Has Andy Reid Publicly Stated About His Beliefs, Especially Regarding Jesus Christ and the Bible?

When people ask Coach Reid about his beliefs, he shares with such a wonderful, open heart! You might have heard about the time he was asked for his favorite book trilogy. With a smile, he said, “How ’bout the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Pearl of Great Price? I like ’em all”.¹ What a beautiful way to honor the scriptures that guide his life, starting with the Bible and including those special to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Beyond this, he’s clearly shared his deep trust in God, saying, “I went to BYU. That’s a big part of my background of faith. I know there’s a Heavenly Father, I believe in that, so I go forward with that and I know I’ve got that support”.³ Believing in God the Father and Jesus Christ is the very heart of his Church’s teachings.¹²

For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day the Bible is God’s precious word 12, a foundation, not replaced but cherished alongside their other scriptures. Coach Reid’s “trilogy” comment shows this, putting the Bible right there at the forefront. He also finds inspiration in the lives of Christ and Joseph Smith, the Church’s founding prophet, saying, “What a great example (Christ) was for us, all the trials and tribulations that he went through, (and) Joseph Smith, the trials and tribulations that he went through. These are great examples for us”.³ Joseph Smith is the founding prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When Coach Reid speaks of his faith, it’s like a heartfelt testimony. He connects with all Christians by honoring the Bible, and then lovingly shares his own Church’s unique heritage. It’s a beautiful way to build bridges, starting with shared love for God and Christ.

How Does Andy Reid’s Faith Influence His Coaching Philosophy and Personal Life?

Coach Reid’s faith isn’t just for his private life; it shines through in his coaching too! He once shared that “really everything” about how he coaches is touched by his faith.¹¹ Isn’t that powerful? It means his spiritual heart and his leadership go hand in hand.

One beautiful way this shows is in his desire to be a positive role model for his team.¹¹ People say players are even mindful of their words around him, and he likes the team music to be uplifting, without profanity.¹¹ That’s living your values! His faith, and the tough times he’s walked through, like losing his precious son Garrett 15, seem to have given him a big heart for redemption and second chances.¹⁶ He’s known for giving players who’ve stumbled a new opportunity.¹⁶ That compassion, that belief in people’s ability to grow, that’s a hallmark of a faith-filled life. Even in his own deep sorrow, he extends grace, showing his beliefs guide his actions as a leader.

Coach Reid also champions unity and connection. He believes that when players serve others together, it makes the team stronger, stating, “We think it builds unity… We come from all different backgrounds, and so to be able to bring us all together and do that even makes us a greater team and stronger team”.⁶ That spirit of service is something all faiths can celebrate! His time at BYU with Coach LaVell Edwards, a man of great faith himself, surely helped shape him.¹⁶ And in a little nod to his faith’s lifestyle, he once mentioned he doesn’t drink coffee: “I don’t drink coffee. I’m not a coffee drinker. … I just get up and go”.¹¹ This lines up with the health guidelines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day known as the Word of Wisdom.

Do Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Like Andy Reid, Consider Themselves Christian?

A question many good people have is: Do members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day like our friend Andy Reid, see themselves as Christian? The answer is a resounding YES! 12 The Church itself makes it wonderfully clear: “Jesus Christ is central to the lives of Church members”.¹² They believe with all their hearts that God sent His Son, Jesus, to save us all, and that through faith in Him, we find salvation.¹² Believing in Jesus as the Savior, whose Atonement helps us overcome sin and return to God, is a cornerstone of their faith.¹³

They see their Church not as Protestant or Catholic as “a restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ as originally established by the Savior in the New Testament of the Bible”.¹² This idea of a restored church is very special to them.

It’s good to understand that some folks from other Christian paths might have different viewpoints, often because of specific theological ideas about God, the Trinity, or scriptures beyond the Bible.¹⁷ An LDS historian, Grant Underwood, wisely said there’s “no universally regarded central authority or supreme court of Christianity to determine such matters”.¹⁷ So, “Christian” can mean different things to different people. For Latter-day it’s about their deep love and worship of Jesus Christ. Other traditions might define it by certain historical creeds, like the Nicene Creed, which describes things like the Trinity in a way that’s different from LDS beliefs. Understanding these different perspectives helps us all.

How Do These LDS Beliefs Compare to Teachings in Other Christian Traditions?

It’s always good to understand each other better. When we look at the beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints next to other wonderful Christian traditions (like Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox), we see beautiful similarities and some distinct differences. Often, these differences come from how each tradition views God’s guiding authority: many Christian paths look to the Bible and historic creeds as their main sources, while Latter-day Saints cherish the Bible plus modern revelation, other scriptures, and living prophets.

Here is a table outlining some of these comparisons:

Belief Area Mainstream Christian Teaching (General View) LDS Teaching
Nature of God/Trinity One God existing in three co-equal, co-eternal persons: Father, Son, Holy Spirit, of the same substance (Nicene Creed).17 Godhead of three distinct beings: God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Ghost; Father and Son have glorified physical bodies; one in purpose but not same substance.12
Scripture The Bible (Old and New Testaments) is the sole, complete, and infallible Word of God (closed canon).12 The Bible is the Word of God; also accept Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, and Pearl of Great Price as scripture (open canon).12
Jesus Christ Divine Son of God, second person of the Trinity, fully God and fully man, Savior of the world.12 Divine Son of God, Savior of the world, firstborn spirit child of Heavenly Father, separate being from God the Father.12
Path to Salvation Primarily through grace by faith in Jesus Christ; good works are an outcome of faith.12 Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, requiring faith, repentance, baptism by immersion, receiving the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end in obedience to God’s commandments (synergistic: divine initiative and human response).12
Afterlife Generally, Heaven for believers and Hell for unbelievers; some traditions include Purgatory.17 Three main kingdoms or degrees of glory in heaven, based on an individual’s faithfulness and acceptance of Christ’s gospel; potential for eternal progression and to become like God (deification/exaltation).12
Church Authority Apostolic succession traced through historical churches (e.g., Catholic, Orthodox) or emphasis on the priesthood of all believers (some Protestant views).17 Priesthood authority was lost from the earth (apostasy) and restored through Joseph Smith by heavenly messengers; authority passed down through apostles and prophets today.13

Understanding Key Differences:

  • The Godhead/Trinity: A key point of understanding is how Latter-day Saints see the Godhead as three distinct, loving personages, which differs from the Nicene Creed’s view of three persons in one divine substance.¹²
  • Scriptural Authority: They joyfully believe God still speaks today, leading to an open canon with more scripture, while many Christian traditions see the Bible as a closed canon.¹²
  • Nature of God the Father: A unique belief is that God the Father has a glorious, physical body.¹²
  • Becoming Like God (Exaltation): Their uplifting teaching that we can grow forever and become more like God (called exaltation) is a beautiful hope, understood in its own special way compared to similar ideas in other traditions.¹³

Celebrating Common Ground:

Despite these differences, there are important points of common ground:

  • A shared, deep belief in Jesus Christ as God’s Son and our Savior.¹²
  • The vital importance of faith in Jesus, turning our hearts to Him (repentance), and baptism (even if details about baptism vary).¹²
  • Living by wonderful moral principles that echo across the Christian family—like honesty, kindness, and loving our families.
