- The Seattle Times reported in 2008 and 2010 that he is Catholic; in 2008 he said, “I wasn’t LDS,” and that he chose BYU for football and a degree.
- He came to BYU from El Camino College in California when the Cougars needed a quarterback, and in 1996 won the Sammy Baugh Trophy.
- The Salt Lake Tribune reported in 2023 that he arrived as a Catholic who had not lived under BYU’s Honor Code.
- His teammate Chad Lewis remembered him saying: “The two people I respect the most in life are Catholic priests and Mormon missionaries.”
