15 Bible Verses About Brotherhood



  • Jesus names those who do the will of his Father in heaven as his brother, sister and mother (Matthew 12:50), and Hebrews 2:11 says he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.
  • Romans 12:10, 1 Thessalonians 4:9 and Hebrews 13:1 use the Greek philadelphia, love of brothers.
  • 1 Peter 2:17 commands love for the adelphotes, the brotherhood, which the NIV renders “the family of believers.”
  • 1 John 3:12-18 sets Cain, who murdered his brother, against Jesus, who laid down his life, and asks believers to love brothers and sisters in need with actions.
  • Matthew 18:15-17 begins a dispute between believers with a private conversation before anyone else is involved.

The Bible uses brother first for sons of the same parents and then for everyone in God’s family. Proverbs 17:17 speaks of the first kind.
