22 Bible Verses About Doubt

  • Psalm 13, Psalm 22 and Habakkuk 1 put questions of doubt directly to God, and Jesus cried the first line of Psalm 22 from the cross (Matthew 27:46).
  • Abram, Gideon and Moses each questioned a promise or a call; God answered Abram with a covenant and Gideon with signs, and his anger burned only when Moses asked him to send someone else.
  • Jesus answered John the Baptist, Thomas and the disciples in Luke 24 with evidence: what the blind and lame now had, his wounds, the Scriptures explained, and a meal of fish.
  • James 1:6 and Mark 11:23 warn against doubt in the one who asks, while Jude 22 tells the church to be merciful to those who doubt.
  • 2 Timothy 2:13 says that “if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”

The Bible treats doubt in two ways. People who served God, from psalmists and prophets to Jesus’ own disciples, question him, his promises and his fairness, and several of their passages record the reply.
