Summary

  • Job, Jeremiah and Elijah each wish they had died or ask to die (Job 3:11, Jeremiah 20:14, 1 Kings 19:4), and Paul writes that he “despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1:8).
  • Elijah’s request to die is followed by bread, water, sleep and an angel’s word that “the journey is too much for you” (1 Kings 19:7).
  • Psalm 88 ends on “darkness is my closest friend” without the turn to praise found at the end of Psalm 13.
  • Lamentations 3:18 says hope from the Lord is gone, and three verses later the same speaker says “therefore I have hope” because he calls God’s compassion to mind.
  • Jeremiah 29:11 was written to exiles in Babylon, in a letter that set their return after seventy years.

The Bible gives hopelessness a voice in Job, the prophets and the psalms. Job curses the day he was born (Job 3:11), Elijah asks to die (1 Kings 19:4), Psalm 88 ends in darkness, and the exiles in Ezekiel 37:11 say “our hope is gone.” Other passages set against it a hope that rests on what God has done and promised.
