Japanese A prayer for leadership asks God for wisdom to decide well and for a servant’s heart. Solomon, newly king, prayed, “Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad” (1 Kings 3:9). Jesus told his disciples, “whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all” (Mark 10:44).
Notice what Solomon calls himself. He has just been given a throne, and the first thing he says to God is “thy servant”. Centuries later Jesus knelt with a towel and a basin and said the same thing with his hands. Every prayer here comes back to that. Whether you lead a church ministry, a business, a team, a classroom or a home, the people in your care are not yours. You are theirs, and you are God’s.
There are twelve prayers below, asking for wisdom, humility, integrity, courage and strength. This first one is short and new, not a traditional prayer. Pray it before a meeting, a decision or a hard day.
Lord God, You have given me people to lead and work to do today. Give me an understanding heart, as You gave Solomon, so that I can tell good from bad and choose what is right. Keep me honest when honesty costs me something. Make me quick to listen and slow to anger. Let me serve the people in my care, as Jesus came to serve, and never use them. Where I am wrong, show me, and give me the humility to say so. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Which prayer fits what a leader is facing?
Three of the twelve are in the first person, for a leader to pray alone: Strength, Inspiration and Wisdom. Six say “we” and suit leaders who pray together, a staff, a board or a church council: Compassion, Vision, Humility, Courage, Faithfulness and Accountability. The other three, Unity, Integrity and Innovation, speak of leaders as “they”, so anyone can pray them for the people who lead them.
- Wisdom and direction: the prayer for Wisdom, for a hard decision; the prayer for Vision, for planning ahead; the prayer for Innovation, for a time of change.
- Character: the prayers for Humility, Integrity, Accountability and Faithfulness, for honesty, owning mistakes and staying true to God over the years.
- The people you lead: the prayer for Compassion, to see the person behind the task, and the prayer for Unity, for a divided team.
- Pressure: the prayer for Strength, for a long and hard season; the prayer for Courage, for a decision that will cost you; the prayer for Inspiration, for the day your energy for the work runs low.

What does the Bible ask of a leader?
Jesus told his followers plainly that they were not to lead the way the world leads. “Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,” he said. “But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister” (Mark 10:42-43). And he gave himself as the pattern: “even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). The greatest leader who ever lived spent himself for the people he led.
Micah’s summary of what God wants is a good daily test for anyone with authority: “what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?” (Micah 6:8). And Proverbs has a word for the leader who decides everything alone: “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” (Proverbs 11:14). A servant asks before acting.

Prayer for Strength to Lead with Resilience and Perseverance
This one is for the long, hard season, when problems keep coming and nothing seems to move. Pray it alone. It asks for strength to endure, for the Spirit’s guidance in each decision, and for a steadiness that gives others hope.
Heavenly Father,
In Your sovereign wisdom, You have called me to lead. Yet, in this journey, I am met with trials that test my resolve at every turn. Today, I come before You, seeking the strength that only You can give – a resilience that does not falter and a perseverance that endures.
Grant me the fortitude to stand firm in the face of adversity, to embody resilience when the path narrows, and to persevere when progress seems all but halted. May Your Spirit be my guide, infusing each decision I make with grace and purpose, empowering me to lead with conviction and integrity.
In moments of doubt, remind me of Your unending faithfulness. Let Your Word be the compass that guides me, and Your love the anchor that holds me steadfast. Through every challenge, let my leadership reflect Your light, inspiring those around me to journey onwards, anchored in hope and fortified by divine strength.

Paul knew that kind of tiredness, and he wrote to the Galatians, “let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not” (Galatians 6:9).
Prayer for Inspiration to Lead with Passion and Enthusiasm
Sometimes the work goes dull, and your own energy runs low, and the people around you can see it. This prayer asks God to renew your zeal and to help you see the gifts in each person you lead.
Heavenly Father, who ignites the stars and inspires the dawn,
In Your vast creation, You have ordained us to lead, to guide, and to shepherd. Instill in me, Your humble servant, a heart ablaze with passion for the work laid before me. Let my enthusiasm be a testament to Your love and power, invigorating those around me to pursue our collective calling with vigor and joy.
Grant me the wisdom to recognize the spark You have placed in each of us, fostering it into a flame that lights the way. May my leadership mirror the ceaseless enthusiasm of Your creation, ever growing, ever thriving, under Your watchful eye.
Help me to lead not just with the mind but with the spirit, infusing every action with love and excitement. In moments of fatigue or doubt, replenish my zeal with Your divine energy, reminding me that with You, all things gain purpose and possibility.

Paul counted leading among the gifts God gives, and he said how to use it: “he that ruleth, with diligence” (Romans 12:8).
Prayer for Unity to Lead with Collaboration and Harmony
For a board, a staff, a team or a church council that has begun to pull apart. It speaks of leaders as “they”, so a member can pray it for those in charge, and a leader can pray it for colleagues. It asks for the humility to value each other’s work and for trust that holds through disagreement.
Dear Lord, our Guiding Light and Shepherd,
In Your boundless wisdom, You have shown us that unity is strength, and through collaboration, Your will is most effectively fulfilled. We pray for a spirit of unity among our leaders, that they may lead not as islands, but as a united front, embodying the love and cooperation You taught us.
Grant them the humility to recognize the value in each other’s contributions, creating a landscape of diverse yet harmonious efforts. Like the many parts of one body, let them work together seamlessly, enriching their leadership with the grace of collaboration and the beauty of mutual respect.
Bless their intentions, O Lord, so they may seek not personal glory but the advancement of Your kingdom on earth. In times of disagreement, let Your guiding hand bring them back to the path of harmony, reminding them that in Your eyes, we are all one.
Through Your divine inspiration, instill in our leaders the courage to forge alliances grounded in trust, respect, and shared goals. May their united leadership be a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of collective action in Your name.

Unity takes work, and Paul said so to the Ephesians: “Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3).
Prayer for Compassion to Lead with Empathy and Kindness
Targets and tasks can hide the people behind them. This prayer, written with “we” for a team of leaders, asks for patience, careful listening and kindness when the decisions are hard.
Heavenly Father,
In Your wisdom, You have called us to lead. Grant us, O Lord, hearts full of Your compassion. May we lean into the gentle whisper of Your guidance, leading with empathy and kindness that mirrors Your loving nature. Help us to see beyond tasks and outcomes, to recognize the hearts and hopes of those we lead.
In moments of decision, remind us that strength is shown not just through action, but through understanding and patience. Teach us to listen with open hearts and to respond with Your love. Let our leadership be a reflection of Your grace, touching lives and mending spirits.
We ask that our actions sow seeds of compassion in the fields of our communities, nurturing growth, and harmony. May our empathy be a light to those in darkness, a beacon of hope in times of despair.

Matthew tells us how Jesus looked at the crowds: “he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd” (Matthew 9:36). He saw tired people before he saw a task.
Prayer for Vision to Lead with Clarity and Purpose
For planning ahead: a new year, a new venture, a change of direction. It asks God to show the way forward, and to help you tell your own ambition apart from his will.
Heavenly Father,
In Your infinite wisdom, You have called us to lead. We humbly come before You today seeking the vision to do so with clarity and unwavering purpose. Illuminate our paths with Your celestial light, that we may see beyond the immediate horizons to the vast potentials You have laid out for us. Grant us the foresight to recognize the roads You wish us to travel, and the insight to understand the deeper meaning behind our journeys.
Lord, in Your grace, mold our ambitions to align with Your divine plan. Help us to discern between our will and Yours, guiding our steps with the beacon of Your love and wisdom. As the shepherd relies on the staff to guide his flock, so too do we rely on Your eternal guidance to lead those entrusted to our care.
May our leadership serve as a testament to Your glory. Let us lead not for personal accolade but for the greater good of Your kingdom, inspired by the perfect example of service and sacrifice set by Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Proverbs puts every plan in its place: “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).
Prayer for Humility to Lead with Servanthood and Meekness
Every leader is tempted at some point to be served rather than to serve. This prayer goes back to the night Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and asks for the courage to put other people first.
Heavenly Father,
In Your wisdom, You have called us to lead, and in Your kindness, You teach us how. Guide our hearts to embrace humility and meekness, that we may serve rather than be served. Let Your example of washing the disciples’ feet remind us daily that true greatness in Your kingdom is found in the lowest place of service.
Grant us the courage to put others before ourselves, not out of obligation, but from a genuine desire to see Your love manifest in their lives. Help us to remember that, like the moon reflects the sun’s light, we too should reflect Your glory, not our own.
In leading with humility, let us be firm in faith yet gentle in approach, making Your grace and compassion visible to all we encounter. May our leadership inspire others to seek Your face, and in doing so, find the joy and peace that comes from serving You.

When he had finished and sat down again, Jesus told them, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet” (John 13:14).
Prayer for Wisdom to Lead with Discernment and Understanding
For a decision with no clear right answer, or a season full of them. You pray it alone, and it takes up Solomon’s request for an understanding heart, asking for discernment, patience and the habit of listening first.
Heavenly Father,
In this moment of stillness, I come before You seeking the wisdom only You can provide. Grant me, I pray, a heart that seeks understanding over accolades, discernment over decisiveness. Like Solomon, who asked for an understanding heart to govern Your people rightly, I too seek Your guidance to lead with insight and grace.
Illuminate my path with Your light, that I may see beyond the immediate, understanding the deeper needs of those I am called to serve. Bestow upon me the discernment to differentiate between the chaff and the wheat, making decisions that nurture growth and foster peace.
In every challenge, let me be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry, for wisdom’s foundation is patience and love. May my leadership reflect Your love, manifesting not just in words but in deeds that glorify You.

Its line about listening comes from James: “let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). The same letter promises wisdom to anyone who asks in faith: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering” (James 1:5-6). God gave Solomon what he asked for, and he has not grown less generous.
Prayer for Courage to Lead with Boldness and Conviction
Some decisions will cost you: an unpopular call, a hard truth to tell, a stand to take. This prayer remembers God’s charge to Joshua when he stepped into Moses’ place at the head of Israel.
Heavenly Father,
In Your majestic presence, we seek the grace to lead with undaunted courage and steadfast conviction. Just as Joshua was commanded to be strong and very courageous to lead Your people, imbue us with that same spirit of valor—anchored not in our might but in Your eternal wisdom and guidance.
As the potter molds the clay, shape our hearts to align with Your will, making them resilient in the face of adversity. Let Your Word be the lamp unto our feet, illuminating the path of righteousness amidst the shadows of uncertainty. Grant us the boldness to stand firm in our convictions, to champion the truth with love, and to inspire those we lead towards a higher calling in You.
In moments of doubt, remind us of the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us, who led with courage and transformed the world in Your name. May we draw strength from their legacy and Your unfailing promise to be with us always.

These were God’s words to Joshua: “Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest” (Joshua 1:9). The courage came from the company he kept.
Prayer for Integrity to Lead with Honesty and Moral Uprightness
For honesty in leaders when a dishonest way would be easier. It speaks of leaders as “they”, so anyone can pray it for the people who lead them, and it borrows the tree planted by streams of water from Psalm 1.
Heavenly Father,
In Your wisdom, You have placed leaders among us, entrusted with the powerful task of guiding others. We come before You today to pray for these leaders, that You may endow them with the gift of integrity. Like the steadfast lighthouse guiding ships through treacherous waters, let their moral compass direct them towards honesty, transparency, and ethical decision-making.
Lord, in a world tempted by shortcuts and compromises, grant our leaders the courage to uphold truth, even when faced with adversity. May they be likened to trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in season, and whose leaves do not wither—prosperous in their deeds because they are rooted in righteousness (Psalm 1:3).
Help them wear honesty as a badge of honor, understanding that true leadership is measured not by accolades but by the consistency of one’s character. In every decision, may they reflect Your love, justice, and mercy, serving as beacons of light in the shadowed corridors of power.

Proverbs makes integrity a guide in its own right: “The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them” (Proverbs 11:3).
Prayer for Faithfulness to Lead with Devotion and Commitment to God
Leading for years has its own dangers. The work turns routine, or temptation comes. This prayer, written with “we”, asks for steadiness and for the Holy Spirit’s guidance over the long haul.
Heavenly Father,
We come before You today, seeking Your divine guidance and strength to lead with unshakeable faithfulness. As You have entrusted us with the responsibility to guide Your people, let our hearts remain steadfast in devotion to You. May we wear our duties as a badge of honor, reflecting Your love, mercy, and righteousness in every action we take.
Grant us the wisdom to discern Your will in every decision, and the courage to follow through without faltering. May our commitment to You be the beacon that lights our path, and may we never stray from the purpose You have set before us. Help us to lead by example, showing others the joy and fulfillment that come from serving You wholeheartedly.
In moments of doubt or temptation, remind us of Your unfailing presence. Let Your Holy Spirit guide us in truth and grant us the perseverance to pursue Your mission with enthusiasm and faithfulness. For it is by Your grace alone that we can truly lead and inspire.

In the parable of the talents, the master’s praise joins faithfulness and leading together: “Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things” (Matthew 25:21). Notice the word he chooses. Even the ruler is a servant first.
Prayer for Accountability to Lead with Transparency and Responsibility
For leaders who want to own their mistakes. It asks for openness, for the humility to admit a wrong and seek forgiveness, and for trust that is earned by honesty.
Heavenly Father,
In the quiet sanctity of Your presence, we seek guidance on the path of leadership You have set before us. Grant us, O Lord, hearts that are open to Your divine will, minds that pursue Your truth with transparency, and spirits willing to bear the weight of responsibility with grace.
Teach us to lead with the light of Your wisdom, making decisions that reflect Your love and justice. Let our actions illuminate the way for others, never shrouding our intentions in darkness, but always standing accountable before You and those we serve. Empower us to recognize our missteps, to seek forgiveness, and to learn, ever drawing closer to the example of Christ, who led with ultimate humility and strength.
As vessels of Your will, instill in us the courage to act with integrity, securing the trust of those we lead through our commitment to honesty and responsibility. May our leadership serve as a beacon of hope, guiding others to the safe harbor of Your embrace.

Proverbs is blunt about what hiding a mistake costs: “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13).
Prayer for Innovation to Lead with Creativity and Adaptability
When the old ways have stopped working, change is hard to lead. This prayer speaks of leaders as “they” and asks for creativity, adaptability and the courage to try a new path.
Heavenly Father,
In the vast expanse of Your creation, You have modeled the ultimate example of creativity and adaptation. You make rivers in the desert and ways in the wilderness. Today, we seek Your inspiration for those called to lead.
Grant them the courage to embrace innovation, that they may envision new paths for progress. Bestow upon them the adaptability of the willow, which bends but does not break in the fiercest winds. Infuse their spirits with creativity, that they might paint Your love and wisdom in broad strokes across the canvas of their responsibilities.
May their leadership be a beacon of hope, guiding those they lead to shores of promise and possibility. Let them lead not by might nor by power, but by Your Spirit, reflecting Your ingenious nature in every decision they make.

Its picture of rivers in the desert comes from Isaiah, and it is a fitting last word for anyone who leads: the new path is God’s before it is ours. “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert” (Isaiah 43:19).
