Prayers for Grandchildren: Protection, Faith and Blessings from a Grandparent

  • Jacob blessed his grandsons Ephraim and Manasseh with the words “The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads” (Genesis 48:15–16).
  • Short prayers cover a birth, baptism, protection, faith, school, life online, sickness, the teenage years, distance, divorcing parents, a grandchild who has left the faith and grandparents raising grandchildren.
  • Traditional prayers include the priestly blessing of Numbers 6:24–26 and the 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s “For a Birthday” and “For Those We Love.”
  • The Bible’s grandmothers include Naomi, who nursed Obed, David’s grandfather (Ruth 4:16–17), and Lois, Timothy’s grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5).
  • Catholics and Orthodox honor Joachim and Anne as Jesus’ grandparents; their names come from the Protoevangelium of James, not the Bible, and since 2021 Catholics keep a World Day for Grandparents on the fourth Sunday of July.

A grandparent’s daily prayer can be this short: “Lord, keep [name] safe in body and heart. Let [him or her] know you early and love you long. Amen.” For a blessing, Jacob’s words over his grandsons serve: “The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads” (Genesis 48:16).
