Prayers for Someone with Cancer: Diagnosis, Treatment and Healing

  • Short prayers cover waiting for results, the diagnosis, the doctors, surgery, chemotherapy or radiation days, pain, treatment that is not working, a child with cancer, someone who does not believe in God, caregivers and clear scans.
  • Traditional prayers come from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (“A Prayer for Recovery,” p. 315; “when there appeareth but small hope of Recovery,” p. 316) and the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers (“Prayer in the Beginning of Sickness,” pp. 459–460).
  • Catholics ask the prayers of Saint Peregrine Laziosi (1265–1345) for people with cancer; the cancer story is later devotion, and the 1912 Catholic Encyclopedia does not mention it.
  • James 5:14–15 tells the sick to call the church’s elders; Catholics ask for the Anointing of the Sick and Orthodox Christians for Holy Unction.
  • Prayer goes alongside medical care; the American Cancer Society (1-800-227-2345) and Macmillan Cancer Support (0808 808 00 00) answer questions about cancer.

When someone you love has cancer, pray by name: “Lord, [name] has cancer. Guide the doctors and the treatment, ease the pain and the fear, and heal [name], if it is your will. Hold our family together while we wait. Amen.”

Prayer goes alongside the care of the cancer team and never replaces it. For questions about a diagnosis or treatment, the American Cancer Society answers on 1-800-227-2345 in the US, and Macmillan Cancer Support on 0808 808 00 00 in the UK.

Prayers for someone with cancer

Put the person’s name where [name] appears. To pray for yourself, say “me.”

While waiting for test results

Lord, we are waiting for the biopsy results, and every hour feels long. “My times are in thy hand” (Psalm 31:15). Calm our imaginations, help us sleep tonight, and give us strength for whatever the doctor says. Amen.

After the diagnosis

Father, the word we feared has been said. [Name] has cancer. We do not know yet what it means or what comes next. Stay close. “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God” (Isaiah 41:10). Help us take in the news one piece at a time. Amen.

For the doctors and the treatment plan

Lord, give the oncologists, surgeons and nurses caring for [name] clear judgment and steady hands. Let the scans show what they need to see, and lead them to the right treatment. Make the medicine work against the cancer and spare the healthy body. Amen.

Before surgery

God, [name] goes into surgery tomorrow. Guide the surgeon’s hands, keep the anesthesia safe, and let the team remove everything that needs to come out. Bring [name] back to us awake and comfortable. Amen.

There are more prayers before surgery for the patient, the surgical team and the family.

On chemotherapy or radiation days

Lord, today is another treatment day. Help [name] through the needle, the waiting room and the tiredness afterward. Keep the nausea down and the infections away, and let the treatment do its work. “They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength” (Isaiah 40:31). Amen.

When there is pain

Father, [name] is hurting. Ease the pain through the medicine and the nurses, and where it cannot be eased, hold [him or her] through it. “My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever” (Psalm 73:26). Amen.

When the treatment is not working

Lord, the scans are not good, and the doctors are running out of options. We still ask you to heal [name]. Whatever happens, do not let [him or her] be afraid or alone. “Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). Amen.

For a child or a son or daughter with cancer

Father, my child has cancer, and I would take it from [him or her] if I could. Give my child courage in the hospital and moments of ordinary fun between treatments. Give me the strength to be calm when I am not. Keep our other children close, and let none of them feel forgotten. Amen.

For someone with cancer who does not believe in God

Lord, [name] does not believe in you, and I will not force my faith on [him or her]. I ask you anyway: heal [his or her] body, give [him or her] peace, and let [him or her] feel loved through the people who care. Show me how to help without preaching. Amen.

For the family and caregivers

God, we are driving to appointments, sitting in waiting rooms and lying awake at night. Give us patience with each other, rest when we can take it, and the humility to accept help from friends. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Amen.

When the scans are clear

Thank you, Lord. The doctor says there is no sign of cancer. Thank you for the medicine, the people who gave it and every prayer that was said. Stay with [name] through the check-ups ahead, and keep fear from spoiling the good news. Amen.

Traditional prayers for the sick

The 1928 Book of Common Prayer and the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers do not name cancer, but their prayers for the sick fit it.

For recovery

O God of heavenly powers, who, by the might of thy command, drivest away from men’s bodies all sickness and all infirmity; Be present in thy goodness with this thy servant, that his weakness may be banished and his strength recalled; that his health being thereupon restored, he may bless thy holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1928), Visitation of the Sick, “A Prayer for Recovery,” p. 315

A sick person’s own prayer

The 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers gives this prayer for someone at the beginning of an illness. These are its opening lines and its close.

O Heavenly Father, who in Thy wisdom knowest what is best for me, glory be to Thee. Lord, if it seem good in Thy sight, remove from me this sickness which I now feel seizing upon me, that I may employ my health to Thy glory, and praise Thy name. … Lord, bless all the means that are used for my recovery, and restore me to my health, if it be Thy will, in Thy good time; but if Thou hast appointed otherwise for me, Thy blessed will be done.

A Manual of Prayers for the Use of the Catholic Laity (1888), Devotions for the Sick, “Prayer in the Beginning of Sickness,” pp. 459–460

When there is little hope of recovery

O Father of mercies, and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need; We fly unto thee for succour in behalf of this thy servant, here lying in great weakness of body. Look graciously upon him, O Lord; and the more the outward man decayeth, strengthen him, we beseech thee, so much the more continually with thy grace and Holy Spirit in the inner man. Give him unfeigned repentance for all the errors of his life past, and stedfast faith in thy Son Jesus; that his sins may be done away by thy mercy, and his pardon sealed in heaven; through the same thy Son, our Lord and Saviour. Amen.

The Book of Common Prayer (1928), Visitation of the Sick, “A Prayer for a Sick Person, when there appeareth but small hope of Recovery,” p. 316

Where the book prints “he” or “him,” say “she” or “her” for a woman.

Saint Peregrine and cancer

Catholics ask the prayers of Saint Peregrine Laziosi for people with cancer. The Catholic Encyclopedia’s article on the Servite order (1912) records that he was born at Forlì in 1265, struck Saint Philip Benizi in his youth, repented, joined the Servite order in 1283 and died in 1345, and that he was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. It does not mention cancer. The link comes from a later story, told in Catholic devotional writing, that a cancerous growth on his foot was to be amputated, and that after a night of prayer he woke to find it healed. His patronage of cancer patients is popular devotion, not a teaching of the Church. Catholic and Orthodox Christians ask saints to pray for them; most Protestants pray to God alone.

Asking the church to pray

The Letter of James tells the sick to call the church’s elders: “let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up” (James 5:14–15). Catholics can ask a priest for the Anointing of the Sick, and Orthodox Christians for Holy Unction, a service that Hapgood’s 1906 translation of the Orthodox service book sets out in full. Protestants can ask their pastor or elders to visit and pray. Many cancer centers also have chaplains, and the nurses can ask one to come.

For a person facing cancer alone, a short prayer from the prophet Jeremiah can be said at any hour: “Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise” (Jeremiah 17:14).

Prayer for Strength at the Start of the Journey

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming and frightening. This prayer is a plea for God’s strength to face this new and difficult path, asking for courage and a firm foundation right from the very beginning.

Heavenly Father,

I come before You today with a heavy heart, feeling shaken by this diagnosis. The path ahead seems steep and uncertain, and honestly, I am scared. Lord, I feel weak, but I know You are strong. I ask that You would pour Your divine strength into me right now.

Be my rock and my fortress when I feel like I am crumbling. Remind me of Your promise in Isaiah 41:10, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Let these words be the anchor for my soul.

Help my faith to be the rock I stand on when the winds of fear and doubt blow. Grant me the courage to take the first step, and then the next one, knowing that You are walking beside me. Fill my spirit with a resolve that can only come from You. I place this journey, its challenges, and its outcome completely in Your loving hands, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

This prayer reminds us that we do not have to face our battles alone. God promises to be our ever-present source of strength, giving us the supernatural courage we need for the difficult road ahead.

Prayer for Peace to Calm a Worried Heart

Anxiety and fear often accompany a cancer diagnosis, stealing our peace and filling our minds with worry. This prayer is a request for God’s divine peace to wash over a troubled mind, replacing worry with calm.

Lord Jesus, Prince of Peace,

My mind is racing with “what ifs” and my heart is filled with anxiety. The quiet moments are the hardest, when fear whispers lies to me. I feel restless and overwhelmed by the unknown. I ask You to step into the storm raging within me and speak peace.

Your Word in Philippians 4:7 promises a peace “which transcends all understanding,” one that will “guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I claim that promise right now. Guard my heart from fear and my mind from anxious thoughts. Settle my spirit, Lord. Help me to breathe deeply and feel Your calming presence surrounding me.

When I lay down to sleep, quiet my thoughts so I can find true rest. Help me to focus on today, on this single moment, and to place my trust in You instead of my worries. I surrender all my anxieties to You, trusting that you hold me securely in Your care, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

God offers a peace that the world cannot give or understand. This prayer helps us open our hearts to receive that calm assurance, trusting that He is in control of every detail, no matter how chaotic things may seem.

Prayer for Guiding the Hands of Doctors and Nurses

We rely on the skill and knowledge of medical professionals during cancer treatment. This prayer asks God to grant wisdom, skill, and compassion to the doctors, surgeons, and nurses providing care.

Lord of All Wisdom,

I lift up the entire medical team that you have placed in my life. I pray for the doctors, oncologists, surgeons, and nurses who are responsible for my treatment and care. They hold so much knowledge, but I know that true wisdom and healing come from You.

Please guide their minds and their hands. Give them clarity of thought as they review my case and make decisions about my treatment plan. When they perform procedures, steady their hands and grant them precision and skill. As the Bible says in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” I ask for this generous gift of wisdom on their behalf.

More than that, Lord, fill their hearts with compassion. Help them to see me not just as a patient or a disease, but as a person You love. Give them encouraging words and a gentle touch. Bless them for their dedication and tireless work, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

This prayer places trust not only in medicine but in the God who guides the leaders of medicine. It’s an act of faith, entrusting our physical care to human hands that are being guided by a divine power.

Prayer for Endurance During Difficult Treatments

Chemotherapy, radiation, and other treatments can be physically and emotionally draining. This prayer is a petition for the supernatural endurance needed to get through the toughest days of treatment, one day at a time.

Almighty God, my Sustainer,

The treatments are hard. They leave me feeling weak, sick, and completely exhausted. On these days, it’s a struggle to keep going, and my spirit feels as tired as my body. Lord, I ask for a strength that is not my own. I ask for Your divine endurance.

Help me to bear the side effects with patience and grace. When I feel I have nothing left, please carry me. Remind me that this difficult season is temporary, but Your love is eternal. Your Word in Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Help me not to give up, Lord. Help me to see this treatment as the “doing good” that will lead to a harvest of healing.

Give me the mental and emotional toughness to face each appointment and each round of medicine. Renew my strength day by day, or even hour by hour if needed. Be my ever-present help in this time of trouble, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

When our own strength runs out, we can rely on God’s infinite supply. This prayer is a humble admission of our limits and a confident request for His power to carry us through the fire of treatment.

Prayer for Relieving Pain and Bringing Comfort

Physical pain and discomfort can drain hope and make every moment a struggle. This is a simple prayer asking God, the Great Physician, for relief from pain and for His comforting presence to be felt.

Merciful Father,

You see my suffering. You know the pain that I feel in my body—the aches, the soreness, the deep discomfort that never seems to go away. It makes it hard to think, hard to pray, and hard to feel hope. Lord, I ask You to touch my body and bring relief.

Please ease this pain. Guide the doctors to find the right medicines to manage it, and magnify their effects. Beyond medicine, I ask for Your divine touch of comfort. The Bible says You are the “God of all comfort.” Please, be that for me right now. Surround me with a sense of Your gentle and loving presence.

Help me find moments of peace and rest, free from this constant pain. As Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” My body feels broken and my spirit feels crushed, Lord. Be close to me now. Let me feel Your arms of comfort around me, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

This prayer acknowledges that God cares about our physical suffering. It is a vulnerable request for not only medical relief but also the spiritual comfort that only He can provide, reminding us that He is near in our pain.

Prayer for Trusting in God’s Unseen Plan

It’s hard to understand why we must go through trials like cancer. This prayer is an act of surrender, asking for the faith to trust in God’s sovereign plan, even when we cannot see or understand it.

Sovereign Lord,

I admit that I do not understand why this is happening. My heart is full of questions, and it is hard to see Your plan in the middle of this pain and uncertainty. It is in this moment of confusion that I choose to trust You.

Help me to believe in Your goodness, even when my circumstances are not good. Strengthen my faith to trust in Your purpose, even when it is hidden from my eyes. Your Word in Proverbs 3:5-6 tells me to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” I choose to stop leaning on my own need to understand and to simply trust in You.

Help me to release my grip on the life I planned and accept the one You are walking me through. Give me peace in knowing that You are working all things together for my good, even this. I surrender my questions and my future to You, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

True faith is not the absence of questions, but the choice to trust despite them. This prayer is a powerful step of faith, letting go of our need for answers and holding on to God’s unchanging character.

Prayer for Hope When the Future Feels Uncertain

During a long health battle, it can be easy to lose hope and see only darkness ahead. This prayer is a cry for God to restore hope and to be a light in the darkness, illuminating the path forward.

God of Hope,

The journey is long, and today, the future feels dark and uncertain. Hope is hard to find when I am tired and the news is not always good. I feel my spirit sinking, and I need You to lift me up. You are the source of all true and lasting hope.

Please, Lord, shine Your light into my darkness. Fill my heart again with a confident expectation of Your goodness. Remind me that this battle is not the end of my story. Help me to look beyond my current struggle and to fix my eyes on You. Romans 15:13 says, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” I ask for that overflowing hope right now, by the power of Your Spirit.

Help me to find joy in small things today—a kind word, a moment of sunshine, a small bit of good news. Rebuild my hope, piece by piece, until it is strong enough to silence my fears, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Hope is not a feeling, but a choice to trust in God’s promises for the future. This prayer asks God to fuel our hope, making it a powerful force that can overcome even the deepest sense of despair.

Prayer for the Complete Healing of Body and Spirit

This is a bold prayer for total healing—not just the removal of cancer cells, but the restoration of the whole person. It asks for physical healing for the body and spiritual renewal for the soul.

Jesus, my Healer,

You are the Great Physician, the one who performed miracles and made the broken whole. You have power over all sickness and disease. I come before You today to ask for a miracle. I ask for Your complete healing touch upon my body.

Lord, I pray that you would command every cancer cell in my body to die and for every damaged part to be restored to perfect health. As your Word says in Jeremiah 30:17, “‘But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,’ declares the Lord.” I stand on this promise and ask You to fulfill it in me. Let Your healing power flow through my veins, my tissues, and my organs.

But Lord, heal my spirit as well. Heal the fear, the anger, and the sadness that this illness has caused. Make me whole again, not just physically, but emotionally and spiritually. Restore my joy, my peace, and my strength, creating in me a new and clean heart, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

This prayer is an act of bold faith, asking God to do what man cannot. It acknowledges His ultimate power over sickness and seeks a restoration that goes deeper than the physical, touching every part of our being.

Prayer for the Family and Loved Ones Who Care

Cancer affects the entire family. This prayer is for the caregivers, spouses, children, and friends who provide support, asking God to give them strength, patience, and encouragement on their own difficult journey.

Compassionate Father,

I thank you for the incredible gift of my family and loved ones. They walk this difficult road with me, and their burden is heavy too. I lift them up to You now and ask for Your special blessing upon them.

Give them strength when they are tired from caring for me. Grant them patience when they feel frustrated or helpless. Protect their own health and well-being. The Bible tells us to “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2). They are carrying my burdens so faithfully, Lord. Please fill them with Your peace and reassure them of Your love.

Guard their hearts from anxiety and despair. Provide for all their needs—emotional, physical, and spiritual. Let them feel my deep gratitude and Your deep love for them today. Renew their spirits and remind them that you see their silent sacrifices and you will be their strength, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

We are not in this fight alone, and neither are our caregivers. This prayer recognizes their sacrifice and asks God to provide for them, ensuring they are also supported and strengthened by His grace.

Prayer for Patience on Long and Tiring Days

The cancer journey is often a marathon, not a sprint, filled with waiting and slow progress. This prayer asks for the spiritual gift of patience to endure the long, tiring days with grace and perseverance.

God of all Time and Seasons,

This journey feels so long. There are days filled with waiting—waiting for appointments, for test results, for treatments to be over, for my body to feel better. On these long and tiring days, my patience wears thin. I feel restless and frustrated.

Lord, I ask you to grant me the gift of patience. Help me to find peace in the waiting. Remind me that You are never in a hurry, and Your timing is always perfect. Help me to live in the present moment rather than anxiously trying to rush into the future. Your Word in Romans 12:12 says to be “joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” Help me to live out these words.

Teach me to use these slow days to draw closer to You, to rest my body and my spirit. Calm my agitated heart and replace my frustration with a gentle and quiet trust. Help me to endure this season with a patience that can only come from You, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Patience is a virtue that is hard to maintain during a long illness. This prayer is a humble request for God to trade our frustration for His peace, helping us endure the waiting with a trusting and patient heart.

Prayer for Gratitude for Each New Morning

In the midst of a battle with cancer, it can be hard to feel thankful. This prayer is a conscious choice to cultivate a heart of gratitude, thanking God for the gift of each new day.

Giver of Life,

It is so easy to focus on what is wrong—the sickness, the pain, the fear. But today, I want to pause and thank You. Thank You for the gift of this new morning, for the breath in my lungs, and for the life that is still mine to live.

Help me to open my eyes and see the blessings that still surround me. Thank you for the love of my family, the skill of my doctors, and the support of my friends. As Psalm 118:24 says, “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Help me, Lord, to choose joy and gladness today, simply because this day is a gift from You.

Shift my perspective from what I have lost to what I still have. Cultivate a spirit of gratitude within me, because I know a thankful heart is a powerful weapon against despair. Thank you for your faithfulness that is new every morning. I receive this day with a grateful heart, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Gratitude shifts our focus from our problems to our Provider. This prayer is a powerful discipline that helps us find light in the darkness and recognize God’s ongoing goodness, even in the hardest of times.

Prayer for a Full Restoration and a New Beginning

Looking beyond the current fight, this prayer is for a future defined not by sickness, but by health, purpose, and a new beginning. It is a prayer of hope for complete restoration and a renewed life.

Lord of New Beginnings,

I look to the future with hope, trusting You for a full and complete restoration. I pray not just for a “cancer-free” status, but for a life that is truly renewed and restored in every way.

I ask that you would heal the damage done by this disease and its treatments. Restore my strength, my energy, and my vitality. But even more, Lord, I ask for a new beginning for my spirit. Use this difficult journey to give me a deeper faith, a greater compassion for others, and a new sense of purpose. Your Word promises in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” Let me emerge from this trial as a new creation.

Give me a future filled with joy, health, and service to You. Let the story of my healing be a testimony to Your power and goodness. I look forward with faith, ready for the new chapter You have planned for me, In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

This prayer looks forward in faith, asking God to not only close a painful chapter but to write a beautiful new one. It is a declaration of hope that God can bring something good and new out of our greatest trials.
