Summary
- Paul lists six pieces of the armor of God in Ephesians 6:14–17: the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, “which is the word of God.”
- A short prayer goes with each piece, followed by prayer for others as in Ephesians 6:18.
- Paul wrote as a prisoner, “an ambassador in bonds” (Ephesians 6:20), and his images echo Isaiah 59:17, 11:5 and 52:7 and his own words in 1 Thessalonians 5:8.
- Traditional prayers quoted are the Advent collect on “the armour of light” (1928 Book of Common Prayer, p. 90) and a Pentecost Vespers prayer, “Arm us with the armour of thy righteousness” (Hapgood, 1906).
- Ephesians 6:10–17 was the Epistle for the twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost in The Garden of the Soul (1871); the 1928 Prayer Book reads Ephesians 6:10–20 on the twenty-first Sunday after Trinity.
