Prayers for the Removal of the Wicked: Protection, Justice and the Psalms

  • Psalm 7:9 prays, “Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just”; short prayers built on it cover protection, justice, lies, hostile coworkers, a wicked leader, fear, bitterness, repentance, vengeance and peace afterward.
  • Traditional prayers are quoted from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (the Litany and the Collect for Peace) and a Leo XIII antiphon to Saint Michael printed in Lasance’s Catholic Girl’s Guide (1906).
  • Psalms 35, 58 and 109 pray against enemies, while Jesus commanded, “Love your enemies … pray for them which despitefully use you” (Matthew 5:44); the Litany asks God to forgive enemies and “turn their hearts.”
  • The “hedge of protection” comes from Job 1:10 and the “hedge of thorns” from Hosea 2:6, where God blocks unfaithful Israel’s way so she will return.
  • Anyone being threatened or abused is directed to emergency services and to US and UK domestic abuse helplines.

Scripture already has a prayer for this in the seventh psalm: “Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just” (verse 9). In today’s words: “Lord, stop the harm this person is doing. Protect everyone in the way, and turn his heart or take away his power to hurt. Amen.” If someone is threatening, stalking or hurting you, get protection as well as praying. Call 911 in the US or 999 in the UK…
