Saint Peter Damian
Hermit of Fonte Avellana whom the pope called to Rome to help reform the clergy
- Honoured as
- Doctor of the Church
- Western calendar
- 21 February
- Orthodox calendar
- Not kept
Peter Damian was the youngest child of a poor family of Ravenna, and when his mother refused to nurse him he nearly died; later an elder brother named Damian, an archpriest, took him in and had him educated, and Peter added his brother's name to his own in thanks. He left a famous teacher's career for the hermitage of Fonte Avellana around 1035 and became its prior, until Pope Stephen IX called him to Rome in 1057 to help reform the clergy and made him Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia. He died at Faenza on 21 February 1072, and Leo XII proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church in 1828.
