  • マーガレットは聖書には登場しません。ラテン語のMargaritaを経て、ギリシャ語の マーガレット, 「真珠」に由来し、おそらくインド・イラン語派から借用されたものです。
  • 4世紀に殉教したアンティオキアの聖マーガレットは、妊婦の守護聖人であり、中世で最も愛された聖人の一人です。
  • イエスは真珠を神の国のたとえとして用いました。価値を正確に知るプロの商人が、一つの真珠のためにすべてを売り払うというものです(マタイによる福音書13章45-46節)。
  • マタイによる福音書7章6節は、豚に真珠を投げてはならないと警告しています。これは、貴重なものをどこに費やすかについての戒めです。
  • ヨハネの黙示録21章21節には、新しいエルサレムには12の門があり、「どの門もそれぞれ一つの真珠でできていた」と記されています。
