Summary

  • The Feast of Booths in Deuteronomy 16 lasted seven days after the harvest and included servants, Levites, foreigners, the fatherless and widows.
  • In Nehemiah 8 the people wept at the reading of the Law and were told to feast instead, because the day was holy.
  • Purim, set by Mordecai’s letter in Esther 9, is kept with feasting, gifts of food to one another and gifts to the poor.
  • In Luke 15 the shepherd, the woman with the coin and the father each call others to celebrate what was found, and the parable ends without saying whether the elder brother joined in.
  • Isaiah 25 and Revelation 19 describe future feasts: a banquet for all peoples where death is swallowed up, and the marriage supper of the Lamb.

The Bible commands celebration and shows God taking part in it. Israel’s law sets feasts on the calendar (Deuteronomy 16:14), Jesus’ first sign supplies wine for a wedding (John 2:10), and his parables end in parties for what was lost and found (Luke 15:23-24). Other passages record one-time celebrations: David dancing as the ark came into Jerusalem (2 Samuel 6:14-15) and the dedication of the city’s rebuilt wall (Nehemiah 12:43).
