Prayers for Christian Fellowship: Church Groups, Unity and Christian Friends

  • Traditional prayers for fellowship include the Grace (2 Corinthians 13:14), the Prayer of St. Chrysostom from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer and prayers for concord from an 1888 Catholic manual and the 1906 Presbyterian Book of Common Worship.
  • Short prayers cover a small group or Bible study, newcomers, gossip and jealousy, a member who is suffering and thanks for a church family, with intercessions a leader can read aloud.
  • Prayers for Christian friends cover finding them, friendship with a particular person, a friend who has stopped coming to church and two members who have fallen out.
  • The Greek word for fellowship, koinonia, appears 20 times in the New Testament; the King James Version translates it “fellowship” 12 times and “communion” 4 times.
  • Acts 2:42–46 describes the first church sharing teaching, meals, prayer and possessions; 1 John 1:3 grounds fellowship among Christians in fellowship with God.
  • Paul and Barnabas split over John Mark (Acts 15:39), and Paul asked Euodias and Syntyche to “be of the same mind in the Lord” (Philippians 4:2).

A short prayer for Christian fellowship: “Lord Jesus, you promised to be with two or three who meet in your name. Keep us honest and kind with each other, quick to forgive, and open to anyone who joins us.
