1224 Is Not in the Bible — but John 12:24 Is Worth the Trip

  • 1224 is not a number in the Bible, but John 12:24 is worth the trip: “unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed.”
  • Jesus says it days before his death, prompted by Greeks asking to see him, and applies it immediately to everyone listening (12:25).
  • A four-digit reference cannot be biblical. Chapter divisions came around 1227 (Stephen Langton) and verse numbers from the printer Robert Estienne in 1551 and 1555.
  • A reference is the Bible’s index, not its content. Reading significance into the coordinates is reading significance into the filing system.
  • Leviticus 19:26 forbids seeking omens; Philippians 4:6 invites the actual request instead.
