Prayers for Students and Teachers: For Class, Study, Exams and Hard Days

  • Short prayers open and close the school day, and Lasance’s 1906 prayer book gives a “Prayer before Instruction” and a “Prayer after Instruction” that fit any lesson.
  • Student prayers cover studying, exams, a bad grade, a hard subject, friendship and bullying, life away from home and a student who is struggling.
  • Teacher prayers cover a new school year, a difficult class (with Isaiah 50:4), exhaustion, a student’s thanks for a teacher and a student teacher.
  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer asks God to bless “all who teach and all who learn” in schools, colleges and universities.
  • Pius XI printed the Latin prayer before study Creator ineffabilis, traditionally credited to Thomas Aquinas, in his 1923 letter Studiorum Ducem.
  • If a student talks about self-harm or is being hurt, 988 (US), Samaritans 116 123 (UK and Ireland) and 8 800 2000 122 (Russia) take calls.

At the start of a lesson, a teacher and class can pray together: “Lord, bless everyone in this room today. Help us to listen, to learn and to be kind to each other, and help our teacher to teach well. Amen.” Students and teachers each have their own prayers too, for study, exams and a hard class.
