Summary
- The New Testament asks prayer “for all men” because God “will have all men to be saved” (1 Timothy 2:1, 4), and Paul prayed for Israel “that they might be saved” (Romans 10:1).
- Prayer points drawn from Scripture: open eyes and hearts (2 Corinthians 4:4; Acts 16:14), God drawing the person (John 6:44), other believers sent into their life (Matthew 9:38), and the one praying living well (1 Peter 3:1, 15).
- Short prayers cover a spouse, a child who left the faith, a parent, a friend, someone hostile, someone hurt by Christians, someone asking questions, and the one who waits.
- Traditional prayers come from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s Good Friday collect and the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers.
- A prayer of salvation follows Romans 10:9 and 13; Catholic, Orthodox and many Protestant churches also expect baptism (Acts 2:38).
- Augustine’s Confessions records that his mother Monica won her unbelieving husband “towards the very end of his earthly life.”
