Japanese “Lord God, we thank you for every man and woman who has served our country in uniform. Heal the wounds we can see and the ones we cannot, comfort the families who waited for them, and give us the peace they served for. Amen.” That prayer can open a Veterans Day service or be said at home.
If you are a veteran in crisis, or worried about one, call the Veterans Crisis Line: dial 988 and then press 1, or text 838255. It answers at any hour, serves veterans and their families, and does not require enrollment in VA benefits or health care. There are also more Christian and crisis lines.
Veterans Day and Memorial Day
The two American holidays honor different people. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, Memorial Day, the last Monday in May, is for “remembering and honoring military personnel who died in the service of their country,” while Veterans Day is set aside “to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime,” and is “largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service.”
Veterans Day falls on November 11 because the armistice that stopped the fighting of the First World War took effect “on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. An act of Congress made Armistice Day a legal holiday in 1938, and in 1954 Congress replaced the word “Armistice” with “Veterans,” so that the day honors American veterans of all wars.

An opening prayer or invocation
Almighty God, we have gathered to honor the veterans of our country: those who served in war and in peace, at home and far away, and those who never came home. Thank you for their courage and their years of service. Be present with us now, and let what we say and do here honor them truly. Amen.
For those who died in service
Lord Jesus, you said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). We remember before you the men and women who gave their lives in the service of this country. For peace
God of peace, every veteran knows the cost of war better than the rest of us. Hasten the day your prophet promised, when “they shall beat their swords into plowshares” and “neither shall they learn war any more” (Isaiah 2:4). For a veteran who was wounded
Lord, [name] came home carrying an injury that changed [his or her] life. Ease the pain, bless the doctors, nurses and therapists at the VA and elsewhere, and give [name] patience with a body that no longer does what it once did. Show [him or her] every day that [his or her] worth did not end with the injury. Amen.
When the memories come back
God, [name] still hears, sees and smells things that happened years ago. The nightmares come back, crowds and loud noises are hard, and some days feel like the war never ended. Be a refuge, as your word promises: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty” (Psalm 91:1). Lead [name] to a counselor who understands, and give [him or her] sleep. Amen.
For a veteran carrying guilt
Father, [name] cannot forget what [he or she] saw, did or could not stop. You know every part of it. Where there is sin, forgive it, as you promised: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9). Where there is only grief, lift the weight of blame. Put a chaplain, a pastor or a fellow veteran in [his or her] way who can hear the whole story. Amen.
For the move back to civilian life
Lord, the uniform is off, and [name] is trying to find a place in a world that runs on different rules. Open the right door to work, give [him or her] friends who understand, and help [him or her] use the skills and discipline of service in this new life. Amen.
For veterans who are struggling
God, some who served now have no home, no work or no one to call. Some are fighting addiction or despair. Seek them out as a shepherd seeks a lost sheep. Put people and churches in their way who will help without judging, and keep them alive until help reaches them. Amen.
For older veterans
Lord, thank you for the veterans of past wars who are growing old among us. Many have never told their stories. Give them good care, company, and the chance to be heard, and when their time comes, bring them home to you in peace. Amen.

For the families of veterans
Father, the husbands, wives, children and parents of veterans have served too, through deployments, moves and long nights of waiting. Bless them. Give patience to those caring for a wounded or troubled veteran, and let them find rest and help of their own. Amen.
For families who lost someone in service
God of all comfort, these families answered the door to news no one should hear. Stay close to them on birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. You promised a day when “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death” (Revelation 21:4). Hold them until that day. Amen.

Lord, some who served were never found, and their families still wait for an answer. You know where each one lies. Bring comfort to those who wait, and let every one of them be accounted for. Amen.

The second prayer asks mercy for the dead. Catholics and Orthodox pray for the dead, and many Protestants do not; its opening thanksgiving for those who died suits any service.

Soldiers in the Bible
Several soldiers in the New Testament are remembered for their faith. A centurion asked Jesus to heal his servant without coming to the house, explaining, “For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me.” Jesus said, “I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel” (Matthew 8:9–10). Cornelius, “a centurion of the band called the Italian band,” was “a devout man, and one that feared God with all his house” (Acts 10:1–2); after Peter preached in his house, he “commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord” (Acts 10:48). When soldiers asked John the Baptist what they should do, he told them, “Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages” (Luke 3:14).
In the Old Testament, three of David’s warriors broke through the Philistine lines to bring him water from the well at Bethlehem. David would not drink it but “poured it out unto the LORD,” saying, “is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives?” (2 Samuel 23:16–17).
