  • Solomon asked God at Gibeon for “an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad” (1 Kings 3:9), and God granted it.
  • Psalm 119:18 and 119:34 and Paul’s prayers in Ephesians 1:17–18 and Colossians 1:9 can be prayed as they stand.
  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s collect for Pentecost asks for “a right judgment in all things”; the Orthodox First Hour, in Hapgood’s 1906 translation, prays to “Christ, the true Light.”
  • Eight short prayers cover Bible reading, study and exams, a decision, suffering that makes no sense, understanding another person, right and wrong, someone who will not see sense, and God’s love.
  • The King James Version of Isaiah 11:2 names six gifts of the Spirit; the Douay-Rheims adds “godliness,” and the Catechism of the Catholic Church counts seven, including understanding (paragraph 1845).
  • Paul wrote, “I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also” (1 Corinthians 14:15).

Asking God for understanding can be as short as this: “Lord, open my mind to what you want me to see. Give me understanding in all things, and patience with what I cannot yet understand. Amen.” The words echo Paul’s wish for Timothy, “the Lord give thee understanding in all things” (2 Timothy 2:7).
