  • The best-known prayer for God’s will is “Thy will be done” from the Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:10), which Jesus prayed again in Gethsemane: “not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42).
  • Short prayers cover a big decision, two good choices, seeking advice, God’s silence, a disappointing answer, fear of what God may ask, a past mistake, surrender, obedience and a loved one’s path.
  • Older prayers quoted are Thomas à Kempis’s prayer “to be enabled to do God’s will perfectly,” the 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s “For Guidance” and the Suscipe of Saint Ignatius.
  • Russian Orthodox Christians pray the Prayer of the Optina Elders, which asks to give oneself wholly to God’s holy will; its authorship is uncertain.
  • Scripture states parts of God’s will plainly (1 Thessalonians 4:3; Micah 6:8) and, for other choices, points to a renewed mind (Romans 12:2), prayer for wisdom (James 1:5) and “If the Lord will” (James 4:15).

Jesus taught his disciples to pray for God’s will in one line, “Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven,” and prayed it himself about his own suffering.
