Saint Cyprian of Carthage
- Western calendar
- 16 September, with Saint Cornelius
- Orthodox calendar
- 31 August (13 September on the old calendar)
- Patron of
Cyprian, of a rich pagan family of Carthage, became a Christian at thirty-five and was soon made its bishop. He led his flock through the persecution of Decius, the quarrel over taking back those who had fallen away, and a plague, and he wrote that "no one can have God as Father who does not have the Church as mother". When Valerian's edict came in 258 he was tried at Carthage, and on hearing his sentence he said, "Thanks be to God!"; he knelt to pray, bandaged his own eyes, had twenty-five gold pieces given to his executioner, and became the first Bishop of Carthage to die a martyr.
