Saint Kevin of Glendalough
- Western calendar
- 3 June, in the Roman Martyrology; kept throughout Ireland
- Orthodox calendar
- 3 June, kept by the Orthodox Church in America
- Patron of
Kevin, whose name means fair-begotten, was an Irish monk who fled the people seeking his advice and went alone into the wilderness of Glendalough, the valley of the two lakes, where he later founded the monastery that grew into a city in the desert. Once it was established he withdrew again to a hut by the upper lake, and the tradition says the wild animals drank from his hands, and that when a blackbird laid an egg in the hand he held out of his window in Lent, he kept it there until the young had flown. He died on 3 June 618, and for centuries pilgrims have come to the Seven Churches of Glendalough.
