Saint Mary of Egypt

- Patron of
Mary of Egypt left home at twelve for Alexandria, where she lived as a prostitute for seventeen years, and she sailed to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Cross not to pray but to go on sinning. At the church door an unseen force held her back, and when she had wept for her sins and begged the Mother of God for help she went in and venerated the Cross, then crossed the Jordan into the desert and lived there alone for forty-seven years. The monk Zosimas found her there and brought her Communion on Holy Thursday, and a year later he found her body, with a request written on the ground that he bury her.
