概要

  • ほとんどの教会は、信者の魂は死と同時にキリストと共にあり、キリストが再臨される時に体が復活すると教えています。
  • 主な根拠となる聖句は、死にゆく人に対するイエスの約束「今日あなたは私と共にパラダイスにいる」（ルカによる福音書23章43節）と、パウロの「体から離れて主と共に住む」（コリントの信徒への手紙二 5章8節）という言葉です。
  • カトリック教会は、神の恵みの中で死んだものの「まだ不完全にしか浄化されていない」人々は、天国に入る前に煉獄で浄化されると教えています（カトリック教会のカテキズム 1030）。
  • 正教会は、死後の裁きと、最後の審判までの祝福または罰の先取りを教えますが、煉獄は否定しています。
  • プロテスタントの信仰告白は、義人の魂は直接神のもとへ行き、「聖潔において完全にされる」と教えています（ウェストミンスター信仰告白 32.1）。
  • セブンスデー・アドベンチストは「死は復活までの無意識の状態」であると教え、エホバの証人は死者は存在しなくなると教えています。
