Japanese On the day of a baptism, anyone present can pray: “Lord, thank you for [name]. Make [him or her] your own child today, keep [him or her] in your faith for life, and help all of us to show the way. Amen.”
The baptism itself is given “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost,” as Jesus commanded (Matthew 28:19).
Prayers from the baptism service
The churches’ own baptism services hold the oldest prayers for the occasion. The ones quoted here come from Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox books old enough to be free to copy. Where a prayer says “him,” say “her” for a girl or woman.
For the one to be baptized
The Episcopal Church’s 1928 Book of Common Prayer has the minister say these four short petitions just before the water is blessed, and the people answer “Amen” to each:
O merciful God, grant that like as Christ died and rose again, so this Child (this thy Servant) may die to sin and rise to newness of life. Amen.
Grant that all sinful affections may die in him, and that all things belonging to the Spirit may live and grow in him. Amen.
Grant that he may have power and strength to have victory, and to triumph, against the devil, the world, and the flesh. Amen.
Grant that whosoever is here dedicated to thee by our office and ministry, may also be endued with heavenly virtues, and everlastingly rewarded, through thy mercy, O blessed Lord God, who dost live, and govern all things, world without end. Amen.

The first petition follows Paul’s words in Romans 6:4: “we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
The thanksgiving after the baptism
We yield thee hearty thanks, most merciful Father, that it hath pleased thee to regenerate this Child (this thy Servant) with thy Holy Spirit, to receive him for thine own Child, and to incorporate him into thy holy Church. And humbly we beseech thee to grant, that he, being dead unto sin, may live unto righteousness, and being buried with Christ in his death, may also be partaker of his resurrection; so that finally, with the residue of thy holy Church, he may be an inheritor of thine everlasting kingdom; through Christ our Lord. The Catholic words with the candle, and a prayer for the newly baptized
In the Catholic rite printed in the 1888 Manual of Prayers, the priest gives the newly baptized, or the godparent, a lighted candle with these words: “Receive this burning light, and keep thy Baptism so as to be without blame: keep the commandments of God, that when the Lord shall come to the nuptials, thou mayest meet Him together with all the saints in the heavenly court …” The candle recalls Jesus’ parable of the ten virgins with their lamps (Matthew 25). The same book adds this prayer:
O Lord our God, our true Life, Who by the font of Baptism dost illuminate the baptized with heavenly radiance, Who hast vouchsafed to Thy servant by Water and the Holy Ghost remission of all his sins, lay Thy mighty hand upon him, and protect him with the power of Thy goodness; preserve him from losing the earnest of glory; be pleased to bring him to eternal life and to the vision of Thyself; for Thou art our Sanctification, and to Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, do we render praise and thanksgiving, now and for ever, world without end. The Orthodox hymn after baptism
In the Orthodox service the priest says, “The servant of God, N., is baptized, in the name of the Father, Amen. And of the Son, Amen. And of the Holy Spirit, Amen,” immersing the person at each name. After the anointing with chrism, the priest and godparents carry the child around the font while everyone sings the words of Galatians 3:27:
As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Alleluia.

Prayers for the baby or child
Put the child’s name where [name] appears. These suit a baby girl or boy, or an older child.
For a baby on the day of baptism
Father, today we bring [name] to you, as parents once brought their children to Jesus, and he said, “Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not” (Mark 10:14). Take [him or her] into your arms. Keep [him or her] safe in body and soul, and let [him or her] grow up knowing your love. Amen.
For the life that follows
Lord, the water will dry, but let what you begin today last. As [name] grows, give [him or her] faith of [his or her] own, good friends and wise teachers. When [he or she] wanders, bring [him or her] back. Let [name] live all [his or her] life as your child. Amen.
For an older child who understands
Jesus, [name] has chosen to be baptized and knows what the promises mean. Give [him or her] courage to keep them at school and among friends. Let [his or her] faith grow stronger than any fear of what others think. Amen.
Prayers for parents and godparents
In the 1928 prayer book, godparents promise to see that the child learns “the Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments, and all other things which a Christian ought to know and believe to his soul’s health.” These prayers ask for help to keep that promise.
For the parents
Lord, you have trusted [name] to these parents. Give them patience on the long nights and wisdom in the years ahead. Let their home be a place where your name is spoken with love, so that [name] learns to pray by hearing them pray. Amen.
A godparent’s own prayer
Lord, I have made promises today for [name]. Help me keep them. Remind me to pray for [him or her], to show up for birthdays and hard days, and to live so that my faith is worth copying. Amen.
Scripture honors faith handed down this way: Paul remembered the faith “which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice” before it lived in Timothy (2 Timothy 1:5).
Petitions for the prayers of the faithful
Where a church lets family members read petitions during the service, a set like this can be used, with the answer “Lord, hear our prayer” after each line. The priest or pastor should see them first.
- For [name], baptized today: that [he or she] may grow in faith and love all [his or her] life, let us pray to the Lord.
- For [his or her] parents: that their home may teach [name] to know and love God, let us pray to the Lord.
- For the godparents: that they may keep their promises with joy and good example, let us pray to the Lord.
- For this family and all who have come to celebrate: that we may keep the promises of our own baptism, let us pray to the Lord.
- For the members of our families who have died, especially those who would have loved to be here today: that they may rest in God’s peace, let us pray to the Lord.
Churches differ on praying for the dead; Catholic and Orthodox Christians do, and most Protestants leave that last petition out.
A prayer for an adult before baptism
In the 1928 prayer book an adult answers for himself or herself: “Dost thou believe in Jesus the Christ, the Son of the Living God?” “I do.” “Dost thou accept him, and desire to follow him as thy Saviour and Lord?” “I do.” A prayer for the days before:
Lord Jesus, I have decided to follow you, and I am about to say so in front of everyone. Wash away my sins. Fill me with your Holy Spirit. When I come up out of the water, let me walk in a new life and never go back. Amen.
When Philip baptized the Ethiopian official, the man “went on his way rejoicing” (Acts 8:39).
A blessing before the baptism meal
Lord, thank you for this day, for [name]’s baptism, and for everyone who has come to share it. Bless this food and those who prepared it, and bless this family in the years ahead. Amen.
On the anniversary of a baptism
Some Christians keep the date of their baptism each year. A prayer for the day:
Lord, on this day you made me your own. Thank you for the people who brought me to the font and kept me in the faith. Forgive the promises I have broken since, and renew in me the life you gave me then. Amen.
The 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers has a longer “Renewal of Baptismal Vows” for the same purpose (p. 410).
Infant baptism or believer’s baptism?
Churches do not agree on who should be baptized. Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and many other churches baptize babies, with parents and godparents making the promises for them. Baptists and many other Protestants baptize only those old enough to confess their faith. The Southern Baptist Convention’s Baptist Faith and Message (2000) says, “Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.” Families in those churches often hold a baby dedication instead, and the prayers for a baby and for the parents fit that service too.
In an emergency, the old prayer books allow a lay person to baptize. The 1888 Manual of Prayers says that if an infant is in danger of dying before a priest can come, “any other person, whether man, woman, or child, may baptize it,” pouring water on the head while saying, “I baptize thee in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (p. 24). The 1928 Book of Common Prayer gives the same permission to “any baptized person present” when no minister can be found (p. 281).
