Leviticus 17:11 gives the reason Israel was forbidden to eat blood: the life is in the blood, and God gave it for atonement on the altar.
In Genesis 22, God stops Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, and Abraham offers a ram “instead of his son.”
1 Samuel 15:22, Hosea 6:6, Micah 6:8 and Mark 12:33 set obedience, mercy and love above burnt offerings, and Jesus quotes Hosea 6:6 in Matthew 9:13.
Hebrews 10 contrasts sacrifices repeated year after year with Christ’s single sacrifice, and Catholic and Reformed confessions apply “once for all” to the Lord’s Supper differently.
