A Journey of Faith: Answering Your Biggest Questions About Christianity

Have you ever looked up at the stars and wondered who made them all? Have you ever felt a deep sense of love or joy and wondered where it comes from? Or maybe youโ€™ve had moments of sadness and wondered if anyone understands what youโ€™re going through. These are big questions, and asking them is a sign that your heart is alive and searching. Faith isn’t about having all the answers right away; itโ€™s about starting a journey to know the One who holds all the answers.

This is an invitation to explore the Christian faith together. Think of it not as a textbook, but as a conversation about the biggest, most beautiful, and most important story ever told. Itโ€™s a story about a God of incredible power and even more incredible love. Itโ€™s a story about a hero, Jesus, who came to rescue the world. And itโ€™s a story that you are a part of. Itโ€™s okay to have big questions.ยน In fact, Jesus loves a curious heart and welcomes us to come to Him with the open and trusting faith of a child.ยฒ So letโ€™s begin this amazing journey of discovery.

The Heart of Our Faith

To understand Christianity is to understand its heart. Itโ€™s not just a set of rules or a collection of old stories. At its core, itโ€™s about a relationshipโ€”a relationship with God, made possible by His Son, Jesus. Letโ€™s start by asking the most foundational questions about who God is, what He has done for us, and what it means for our lives today.

Who Is God, and What Is He Like?

The most important truth in Christianity is about God Himself. He is not a distant force or a vague idea; He is a person who is powerful, loving, and deeply involved in His creation.ยณ

One God in Three Persons: The Holy Trinity

One of the most amazing and mysterious truths about God is that He is a Trinity. This means that Christians believe in one God who exists in three distinct Persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit.ยณ This doesnโ€™t mean Christians believe in three gods. It means that the one God we worship is a beautiful community of love in His very nature.

This can be a little hard to wrap our minds around, even for adults! Sometimes it helps to think of an analogy, though no analogy is perfect. For example, water can exist in three forms: liquid water, solid ice, and gaseous steam. They are all different forms, but they are all still H2O.โท In a similar way, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are distinct Persons, but together they are the one, true, and living God.ยณ Children often accept this beautiful mystery with simple faith, and thatโ€™s a wonderful place to start.โต

The Creator Who Is Both Near and Far

The Bible teaches that God is the eternal, supreme being who created the entire universe and everything in it.ยณ He is both

transcendent and immanent.

  • Transcendent means God is above and beyond His creation. He is not a part of the universe; He created it. He is eternal and infinite, completely independent of the world He made.ยณ This tells us He is all-powerful and holy.
  • Immanent means God is also deeply involved with His creation. He didnโ€™t just create the world and walk away; He is present and active in our world and in our lives.ยณ This tells us He is personal and caring.

God’s Amazing Character and Attributes

So, what is this powerful and personal God like? The Bible reveals His character to us through His attributes. Some of these show His incredible power:

  • Omnipotent: This means God is all-powerful. He can do anything that is in line with His perfect character.โธ The creation of the universe from nothing is the ultimate display of His power.โธ
  • Omniscient: This means God is all-knowing. He knows everythingโ€”past, present, and future. Nothing is hidden from Him, and He even knows the thoughts and feelings in our hearts.โธ
  • Omnipresent: This means God is everywhere at once. There is no place you can go where God is not there.โน

Even more important than His power are His moral attributes, which show us His goodness and love:

  • Holy: God is absolutely pure, perfect, and completely separate from sin. His holiness is the standard for all that is good and right.โธ
  • Just: God is perfectly fair and righteous in all He does. He always does what is right, rewarding goodness and ensuring that wrongdoing is addressed.โธ
  • Love: This is at the very center of Godโ€™s nature. The Bible tells us, โ€œGod is loveโ€ (1 John 4:8).โธ His love is unconditional and sacrificial, shown most perfectly in the gift of His Son, Jesus.
  • Merciful: God is full of compassion and kindness. He is willing to forgive us when we turn to Him and offers us grace we donโ€™t deserve.โธ
  • Faithful: God is completely reliable and always true to His promises. He never goes back on His word.โธ
  • Immutable: This means God is unchangeable. His character, His love, and His promises are constant and never fade.โธ

Sometimes, it might seem like these attributes are in conflict. For example, how can a God who is all-loving also be a God who is just and must punish sin? The beautiful truth is that Godโ€™s character is perfectly unified. His attributes donโ€™t contradict each other; they work together in perfect harmony.โน His justice isnโ€™t the opposite of His love; it flows from His love. Because God is holy and loving, He cannot simply ignore sin and the hurt it causes. A truly loving God must also be a just God, because love desires what is truly good, pure, and right. His love is a holy love, and His justice is a loving justice. It is precisely because of this perfect character that He created a plan to deal with our sin while still showing us His incredible mercy.

Who Is Jesus, and Why Is He So Important?

At the very center of the Christian faith stands a person: Jesus Christ. He is not just a great teacher or a historical figure; He is the Son of God and the hero of the entire biblical story. Understanding who He is and what He has done is the key to understanding everything else about Christianity.

God in Human Form

The most foundational belief about Jesus is that He is both fully God and fully human.โถ The Bible calls Him the “visible image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15).ยน This means that if you want to know what God is like, you look at Jesus. He was born into a humble Jewish family over 2,000 years ago. His mother was a young woman named Mary, but Christians believe His father was the Holy Spirit, making Him the divine Son of God from the very beginning.ยนโฐ Because He was both God and man, He could do things no one else could, like healing the sick, performing miracles, and, most importantly, forgiving sins.ยนยน

A Life of Perfect Love and Teaching

Jesusโ€™s life was a perfect example of love. He taught people what God wanted them to do, summarizing all of Godโ€™s laws into two great commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind,” and “Love your neighbor as yourself”.ยนโฐ He didn’t just teach this; He lived it. He showed special love and forgiveness to people who were considered outcasts, teaching us that Godโ€™s love is for everyone.ยนโฐ

His Sacrifice and Victory

The most important event in Jesus’s life was His death and resurrection. He was arrested and sentenced to die by crucifixion, a cruel form of execution. Christians believe that on the cross, Jesus willingly took the punishment for the sins of all humanity.โต It was the ultimate act of love, a perfect sacrifice to pay the price that we owed for our wrongdoing.ยฒ

But the story doesn’t end in sadness. Three days after His death, Jesusโ€™s followers found His tomb empty. He had risen from the dead!.ยนโฐ His resurrection proved that He was who He said He wasโ€”the Son of Godโ€”and that He had victory over sin and death. This is the foundation of the Christian hope for eternal life.ยนโฐ

The Answer to Our Deepest Needs

While many people, including teenagers, have a positive view of Jesus and see Him as a loving person, some feel that He is distant or not relevant to their daily lives.ยนยณ Studies have shown that while many young people identify as “Christian,” fewer feel they have a personal, active relationship with Jesus.ยนยณ This often happens when Christianity is seen as just a list of rules to follow rather than a relationship with a person who loves you.ยนโด

The truth is, Jesus is the answer to the deepest longings of every human heart. We all search for a sense of who we are, where we belong, and what our purpose is. Jesus provides the true answer to all three:

  • Identity: The world tells you to find your identity in what you do, how you look, or what others think of you. But these things change. Jesus gives you an identity that is secure and unchanging. Through faith in Him, your identity is “a chosen child of God.” You are forgiven, adopted into God’s family, and deeply loved, not because of what you’ve done, but because of what He has done for you.ยนโต Your worth is not based on your performance but on His precious sacrifice.
  • Belonging: Everyone wants to belong. We look for it in friend groups, on sports teams, or online. This desire for community comes from God, who is Himself a community of love. When you trust in Jesus, you are never alone. He promises to be with you always, and He welcomes you into His family, the Church. You belong to God as your Father, to Jesus as your older brother, and to all other believers as your brothers and sisters.ยนโต
  • Purpose: What is my life all about? Itโ€™s a huge question. Your purpose is not random; you were created by God for a reason: to know Him, love Him, and reflect His glory to the world. As a follower of Jesus, you are invited into God’s great story of redemption. You get to be His “ambassador,” showing His love and character to the people around you.ยนโต This gives your life a meaning that is bigger than yourself and will last for eternity.

Jesus isn’t just a figure in a history book; He is a living Savior who wants to have a relationship with you and satisfy the deepest needs of your soul.

What Does It Mean to Be “Saved”?

You might hear the word “salvation” or “getting saved” a lot in church. It sounds like a big, religious word, but the idea behind it is simple and beautiful. At its heart, salvation means being rescued.ยนโถ Itโ€™s about being delivered from danger and brought into a place of safety and love.

Why Do We Need to Be Saved?

To understand why we need rescuing, we have to start with the problem: sin. The Bible teaches that every single person has a sinful nature. This doesn’t mean we are as bad as we could possibly be, but it means that from birth, we have a tendency to want our own way instead of God’s way.โต We disobey, we have selfish thoughts, and we hurt others. A simple way to think about it is that we all do “naughty things” sometimes and deserve to be in trouble for them.ยฒ This sin creates a barrier that separates us from a perfectly holy and good God.ยนโท The consequence of this separation is what the Bible calls spiritual death.ยนโท

How Are We Saved?

This is the best news in the whole world. Even though we are sinful, God loves us so much that He made a way for us to be rescued. We can’t save ourselves by being “good enough” or doing enough good deeds to cancel out our sin.ยฒ Salvation is not something we earn; it is a completely free gift from God.โถ

This gift is received through faith in Jesus Christ. When Jesus died on the cross, He took the punishment that our sin deserved.โต He paid our debt for us. When we believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead and confess with our mouths that Jesus is our Lord and Savior, God forgives our sins and welcomes us into His family.ยฒ This is what the Bible means when it says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).ยน

A Past, Present, and Future Rescue

It helps to think about salvation in three tenses: past, present, and future.

  • Past (Justification): The moment you put your faith in Jesus, you have been saved from the penalty of sin. God declares you “not guilty” because of what Jesus did. Your relationship with God is restored.ยนโธ
  • Present (Sanctification): Even after you are saved, you still struggle with sin. But you are not alone. The Holy Spirit lives in you to help you become more like Jesus every day. In this sense, you are being saved from the power of sin in your daily life. This is a lifelong process of growing in holiness.โถ
  • Future (Glorification): The Bible promises that one day, Jesus will return. When that happens, all believers will be with Him in heaven forever. At that time, you will be saved from the very presence of sin. You will be given a new, perfect body and will live with God in a new heaven and a new earth where there is no more sadness or pain.โถ

So, salvation is not just a one-time event that gets you a ticket to heaven. It is the beginning of a whole new lifeโ€”a journey of being rescued, transformed, and brought into an eternal, loving relationship with God.

Our Sacred Story

The Christian faith is built on a storyโ€”a true storyโ€”that unfolds from the first page of the Bible to the last. This story is not a collection of random tales, but one epic narrative of Godโ€™s love and His incredible plan to rescue humanity. Let’s explore the book that tells this story and see how its two major parts fit together.

What Is the Bible, and How Does It Tell One Big Story?

The Holy Bible is the sacred book of Christianity. But itโ€™s more than just a book; Christians believe it is Godโ€™s Word to us. Itโ€™s a library of 66 smaller books written by about 40 different authors over many centuries, yet it tells one unified story from beginning to end.โต

God’s Inspired and Trustworthy Word

Christians believe the Bible is inspired by God. This means that although it was written down by human authors, the Holy Spirit guided them to write the exact words God wanted.โถ Because it comes from God, who is perfect and holy, the Bible is considered true, complete, and without error.โต It is the final authority for what Christians believe and how they should live their lives.โต

Trusting the Bible is more than just an intellectual exercise; it is deeply connected to experiencing a real relationship with God. Research has shown that Christian teenagers who have a strong belief in the trustworthiness of the Bible are far more likely to feel Godโ€™s presence and see their prayers answered.ยฒยน Believing what the Bible says isn’t just about accepting facts; it’s about opening your heart to see God at work in your own life. The more you trust His Word, the more you will recognize His hand guiding, comforting, and strengthening you every day.

Two Testaments, One Hero

The Bible is divided into two main sections: the Old Testament and the New Testament.ยนโฐ

  • The Old Testament was written before Jesus was born. It tells the story of creation, the beginning of sin, and Godโ€™s relationship with His chosen people, Israel.
  • The New Testament was written after Jesus lived. It tells the story of Jesusโ€™s life, death, and resurrection, and the beginning of His Church.

Even though they were written at different times, they are not separate stories. The entire Bible is about one person: Jesus. He is the hero of the whole story. The Old Testament is constantly pointing forward, making promises and giving clues about a coming Savior. The New Testament reveals that Jesus is that Savior, the one who fulfilled all of Godโ€™s promises.ยฒยณ It has been said that “every story whispers His name,” because from Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is telling the great story of God’s rescue plan through His Son.ยฒโต

What Is the Story of the Old Testament?

The Old Testament can seem long and sometimes confusing, but itโ€™s an exciting and essential part of Godโ€™s story. It sets the stage for Jesusโ€™s arrival by showing us Godโ€™s incredible faithfulness and humanityโ€™s deep need for a Rescuer. The story of the Old Testament is the story of a promise. It can be broken down into four main parts.

The Books of Law (Genesis โ€“ Deuteronomy)

This section, also called the Pentateuch, lays the foundation for everything. It begins with the book of Genesis, where God creates a perfect world, a beautiful garden for the first humans, Adam and Eve.ยฒยณ But they disobey God, and sin enters the world, breaking their perfect relationship with Him. Yet, right away, God makes a promise that one day a Rescuer will come to defeat sin.ยฒโท

The story then follows Godโ€™s chosen family, beginning with a man named Abraham. God makes a covenant (a special, binding promise) with Abraham, promising to make his descendants a great nation and to bless the entire world through him.ยฒโธ This promise is passed down through his son Isaac and his grandson Jacob. Jacobโ€™s son,

Joseph, is sold into slavery in Egypt by his jealous brothers, but God uses this evil act for good, raising Joseph to a position of great power to save his family from a famine.ยณโฐ

Years later, the descendants of Abraham, the Israelites, have become slaves in Egypt. God calls Moses to lead them to freedom in the book of Exodus.ยณโฐ After a series of mighty miracles, God parts the Red Sea and rescues His people. He then leads them to Mount Sinai, where He gives them His Law, including the

Ten Commandments, to show them how to live as His holy people.ยณโฐ The books of

Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy detail these laws, including a system of animal sacrifices that taught the people that sin was serious and required a paymentโ€”pointing forward to the perfect, final sacrifice Jesus would one day make.ยณโฐ

The Books of History (Joshua โ€“ Esther)

These books tell the history of the nation of Israel after the death of Moses. They tell of how God faithfully brought His people into the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua.ยฒโฐ They describe the chaotic time of the

Judges, when “everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” They tell the beloved story of Ruth, a woman from a foreign land who showed great loyalty and became part of the family line of the future king.

These books also narrate the rise of the kingdom of Israel, starting with its greatest king, David, a man after Godโ€™s own heart, and his wise son, Solomon, who built a magnificent temple for God in Jerusalem.ยฒโธ But after Solomon, the kingdom splits and the people repeatedly turn away from God. These stories are filled with action and drama, but most importantly, they show Godโ€™s unwavering faithfulness even when His people are unfaithful.ยฒยณ

The Books of Wisdom and Poetry (Job โ€“ Song of Solomon)

This section is different from the others. Itโ€™s not a historical narrative but a collection of songs, poems, and wise sayings that explore the deepest questions of life. The book of Job tackles the problem of suffering. The Psalms are a songbook of prayers, full of honest cries to God in times of trouble and joyful praise in times of blessing.ยฒโธ The book of

Proverbs is filled with short, practical sayings for living a wise and godly life.ยฒโน These books teach us how to talk to God and navigate life with wisdom.

The Books of the Prophets (Isaiah โ€“ Malachi)

When the people of Israel strayed far from God, He sent messengers called prophets to call them back. Prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel delivered powerful messages, warning the people about the consequences of their sin but also offering incredible hope.ยฒโฐ They spoke of a future time when God would make a new covenant with His people. Most importantly, they gave more and more details about the promised Rescuer, the

Messiah, who would come to save them. They prophesied that He would be born of a virgin, that He would suffer for the sins of others, and that He would establish an eternal kingdom of peace.ยฒโน

The entire story of the Old Testament creates a powerful sense of anticipation. It shows again and again that people cannot save themselves. They break Godโ€™s laws, they fail their kings, and they ignore the prophets. The whole story builds the case for why the world desperately needs a hero. It makes the arrival of Jesus in the New Testament not just another event, but the long-awaited, desperately needed climax to the story God had been writing all along.ยฒยณ

What Is the Story of the New Testament?

If the Old Testament is the story of a promise, the New Testament is the story of that promise being fulfilled in the most spectacular way imaginable. Itโ€™s where we finally meet the hero, Jesus, and see how His life, death, and resurrection changed the world forever. The New Testament is the thrilling news that the Rescuer has come.

The Gospels: The Story of Jesus (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John)

The New Testament opens with four books called the Gospels, which means “good news”.ยณยฒ Each of these books tells the story of Jesus’s life, ministry, teachings, miracles, death, and resurrection from a slightly different perspective.ยณยณ Think of them as four different photo albums of the most important person who ever lived.

  • Matthew presents Jesus as the promised King and Messiah who fulfills the Old Testament prophecies.
  • Mark shows Jesus as the powerful Son of God and suffering servant who came to serve and give His life as a ransom.
  • Luke, a historian, gives a detailed and orderly account of Jesus’s life, emphasizing His love for the poor, the outcasts, and all who are lost.
  • John focuses on Jesus’s divine identity, revealing Him as the eternal Word of God who became human to give us eternal life.

Together, these four Gospels give us a rich and complete picture of who Jesus is and what He came to do.ยณยฒ

The Book of Acts: The Story of the Early Church

Written by Luke as a sequel to his Gospel, the book of Acts tells the exciting story of what happened after Jesus returned to heaven.ยณยณ It describes how the Holy Spirit came down with power on Jesusโ€™s followers at Pentecost, empowering them to be His witnesses. Acts follows the apostles, especially

Peter and Paul, as they boldly preach the good news about Jesus. We see the very first Christian church being born in Jerusalem and then spreading like wildfire throughout the Roman Empire, overcoming persecution and crossing cultural barriers to reach both Jews and non-Jews.ยฒโด Itโ€™s an action-packed story of the birth of the Church.

The Epistles: Letters to the Churches (Romans โ€“ Jude)

As the Christian faith spread leaders wrote letters, called epistles, to the new communities of believers.ยณยฒ The Apostle

Paul, who had a dramatic conversion from persecuting Christians to becoming their greatest missionary, wrote many of these letters, such as Romans, Corinthians, and Ephesians. Other leaders like Peter, James, and John also wrote letters.ยณโต

These letters are full of practical teaching and encouragement. They explain the meaning of Jesus’s death and resurrection in greater detail, teach Christians how to live in a way that pleases God, and help them solve problems they were facing in their churches. These letters are not just for the ancient churches; they are God’s Word for us today, guiding us in our faith and life.ยณโถ

Revelation: The Story of the Future

The Bible ends with the book of Revelation, a powerful and symbolic book of prophecy.ยณโต It was written by the apostle John to encourage Christians who were facing intense persecution. Using vivid imagery, Revelation pulls back the curtain to show that despite the chaos and suffering in the world, God is in control and Jesus is the ultimate victor.ยณยณ

The book culminates in a breathtaking vision of the future: the final defeat of evil, the return of Christ, and the creation of a new heaven and a new earth.ยณโท It pictures a restored world where God lives with His people, and there is no more death, crying, or pain. It is the ultimate happy ending to the grand story of the Bible.

A key idea that helps tie the New Testament together is the concept of the “already and not yet” kingdom. When Jesus came, He announced that the Kingdom of God had already arrived.ยนยน His miracles and teachings were signs of this new reality breaking into our world. But the Kingdom is

not yet here in its fullness. We still live in a world that is broken by sin and suffering. We live in the overlap between the two ages. We have already been given new life in Christ, but we are not yet free from the presence of sin. This understanding helps us make sense of our lives as Christians: we are called to live as citizens of Godโ€™s “already” kingdom, showing His love and justice to the world, Although we wait with hope for the “not yet” to come, when He will make all things new.ยณโท

A Global Family of Believers

Being a Christian means being part of a familyโ€”a huge, diverse, and global family that spans every continent and includes people from every nation and culture. This family has a long history and is made up of different branches, but all are connected by their faith in Jesus Christ. Let’s zoom out and look at the worldwide picture of Christianity.

How Many Christians Are There in the World?

Christianity is the largest religion in the world. As of a major 2011 study, there were approximately 2.ยนโธ billion Christians on earth, which is nearly a third of the global population.ยณโธ Christians are so widespread that no single continent can be called the center of the faith anymore.ยณโธ

This represents a massive shift over the last century. In 1910, about two-thirds of all Christians lived in Europe. Today, the picture is completely different. The center of Christianity has moved dramatically to what is often called the “Global South.” The majority of Christians now live in the Americas, Africa, and Asia.ยณโธ

To get a sense of this incredible global diversity, here are the 10 countries that had the largest Christian populations in 2010 38:

  1. United States
  2. Brazil
  3. Mexico
  4. Russia
  5. Germany
  6. Philippines
  7. China
  8. Nigeria
  9. Democratic Republic of the Congo
  10. Ethiopia

This list shows that the family of God is truly made up of people from “every tribe and language and people and nation.”

This global shift is a powerful story of hope and spiritual vitality. Although It might seem like faith is declining in some parts of Europe and North America, Christianity is experiencing explosive growth in other parts of the world. In 1910, only 9% of the population of sub-Saharan Africa was Christian; by 2010, that number had soared to 63%.ยณโธ Today, there are more Protestants in Nigeria than in Germany, the very birthplace of the Protestant Reformation. And there are more than twice as many Catholics in Brazil as there are in Italy, the home of the Vatican.ยณโธ This shows that the Holy Spirit is moving powerfully across the globe, and being a Christian means being part of a vibrant, growing, and dynamic worldwide faith.

What Are the Main Branches of Christianity?

If Christianity is one big family, you can think of the different denominations as branches on the same family tree.ยณโน Over 2,000 years of history, Christians have developed different traditions and ways of worship. While all who place their genuine faith in Jesus as their Lord and Savior are part of the one body of Christ, it’s helpful to understand the three main historical branches:

Roman Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism.โดโฐ

Roman Catholicism

The Roman Catholic Church is the largest branch of Christianity, with over a billion members worldwide.โดยน It is led by the

Pope, who is the Bishop of Rome and is seen as the successor to the Apostle Peter.โดยฒ Catholics believe that Godโ€™s revelation comes to us through both the Bible (

Sacred Scripture) and the teachings and practices of the Church passed down through the centuries (Sacred Tradition). They believe that the seven sacramentsโ€”such as Baptism, Communion (which they call the Eucharist), and Confirmationโ€”are special channels of Godโ€™s grace.โดยณ

Eastern Orthodoxy

The Eastern Orthodox Church officially separated from the Roman Catholic Church in 1054 AD, in an event known as the Great Schism. This split happened over disagreements about church leadership and theology.โดโฐ Orthodox Christians do not recognize the authority of a single Pope. Instead, their churches are led by a council of bishops, or a

Synod, with the Patriarch of Constantinople being considered the “first among equals”.โดโฐ Like Catholics, they have a high view of tradition and the sacraments (which they call

Mysteries). A central theme in Orthodox spirituality is theosis, which is the lifelong journey of becoming more and more united with God in His holiness and love.โดยฒ They also use beautiful paintings called

icons in their worship to help them focus on God and the saints.

Protestantism

Protestantism began in the 1500s with the Protestant Reformation, a movement led by figures like Martin Luther and John Calvin who sought to reform the Catholic Church.โดโฐ Protestants place a strong emphasis on the Bible as the ultimate and final authority for faith and life, a principle known as

Sola Scriptura (“Scripture Alone”).โดโด They also emphasize that salvation is a free gift from God that is received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by good works, a principle called

Sola Fide (“Faith Alone”).โดโถ Protestantism is not one single church but is made up of many different denominations, each with its own distinct practices and beliefs, such as Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and Pentecostals.โดโฐ

To help visualize these distinctions, the table below offers a simple comparison.

Feature Roman Catholicism Eastern Orthodoxy Protestantism
Authority Scripture and Sacred Tradition are equal. Interpreted by the Magisterium (Pope & Bishops).ย  Scripture and Sacred Tradition are two sides of the same coin. Guided by the first seven Ecumenical Councils.ย  Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura) is the final authority. Tradition is respected but not infallible.ย
Leadership The Pope (Bishop of Rome) is the head of the Church, seen as the successor to St. Peter.ย  A council of bishops (Synod) leads the church. The Patriarch of Constantinople is “first among equals”.ย  Varies by denomination; often congregational (self-governing) or led by elders/bishops. No single human leader.ย
Salvation A lifelong process of “faith working through love,” received through grace and the sacraments.ย  A lifelong process of theosis (union with God), achieved through faith, love, and participation in the church’s mysteries.ย  A free gift received by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Good works are the result of salvation, not the cause.ย
Sacraments Seven sacraments: Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, Holy Orders.ย  Seven “Mysteries” (same as Catholic list, though the list is not considered rigidly fixed).ย  Generally two “Ordinances”: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist).ย
Mary & Saints Mary is highly venerated as the Mother of God. Saints are venerated and asked to pray for believers.ย  Mary is highly venerated as Theotokos (God-bearer). Saints are venerated as examples and intercessors.ย  Mary is respected as the mother of Jesus. Saints are seen as examples of faith, but prayer is typically directed to God alone.ย

What Is the Catholic Church’s Hope for All Christians to Be United?

With all these different branches, you might wonder if Christians can ever be united. The beautiful truth is that the desire for unity is at the very heart of the Christian faith, and the Catholic Church considers this questโ€”called ecumenismโ€”to be one of its most important tasks.

This deep longing for unity comes directly from Jesus Himself. On the night before He died, Jesus prayed to His Father for all of His followers, saying, “that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me” (John 17:21).โดโน Jesus knew that when His followers are divided, it makes it harder for the world to see and believe in His love. The division among Christians is described as a “scandal” that openly contradicts Christ’s will and damages the cause of sharing the Gospel.โดโน

For a long time, the relationships between different Christian groups were difficult. But in the 1960s, the Catholic Church held a major meeting called the Second Vatican Council, which marked a huge shift in its approach. The Council produced a special document on ecumenism called Unitatis Redintegratio (which is Latin for “The Restoration of Unity”).โตยฒ This document officially made the work of Christian unity a top priority.

The Church’s vision for unity is not about forcing everyone to become exactly the same. Itโ€™s not simply about other Christians “returning to the fold” of the Catholic Church. Instead, itโ€™s about a journey of restoration, where all Christians, guided by the Holy Spirit, grow closer to Christ and therefore closer to one another.โตยฒ The Catholic Church now refers to other baptized Christians not as outsiders, but as “separated brethren”.โดโน It recognizes that other churches and communities have many elements of truth and holiness, such as a love for the Bible, a living faith in Jesus, and the grace of the Holy Spirit at work.โตโด

So how does this unity happen? The Church teaches that it happens through what is called “spiritual ecumenism.” This includes:

  • Dialogue: Having honest and respectful conversations between experts from different churches to understand each other’s beliefs better.โดโน
  • Cooperation: Working together on projects that serve the common good, like caring for the poor and defending justice.โดโน
  • Common Prayer: Praying together for unity wherever possible.โดโน

Although these big, official actions are important, the Church teaches that the true heart of the ecumenical movement is personal. The journey to unity can feel like a huge, global task, but it actually starts in the heart of each and every believer. Unitatis Redintegratio emphasizes that the most important thing Catholics can do for unity is to live holier lives themselves.โตโต The document calls this “change of heart and holiness of life” the very “soul of the whole ecumenical movement”.โตโถ

This means that the best way you can help answer Jesusโ€™s prayer for unity is to become the best, most loving follower of Jesus you can be. The closer you draw to Jesus in prayer, in reading the Bible, and in loving others, the closer you will naturally become to all of your brothers and sisters in Christ who are also trying to follow Him. It is a beautiful reminder that our personal walk with God has an impact on the entire body of Christ.

Living Our Faith

Christianity is not just something to believe; itโ€™s something to live. The big ideas of faith come alive in the tangible, everyday rhythms of life. Two of the most important ways Christians live out their faith are through celebrating special holidays and using symbols that remind them of Godโ€™s great story.

What Are the Most Important Christian Holidays?

Throughout the year, Christians celebrate special holy days, or holidays, that help them remember the most important events in the life of Jesus. These celebrations are a way of stepping back into the story of God’s love and reliving its most crucial moments. The two most important and joyful holidays in the Christian calendar are Christmas and Easter.

Christmas: Celebrating God’s Arrival

Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. The story, found in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, is one of humble beginnings and heavenly announcements. It tells of a young couple, Mary and Joseph, who had to travel to the town of Bethlehem for a census. Because all the inns were full, they had to stay in a stable, and it was there that Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Son of God. She wrapped Him in cloths and laid Him in a manger, a feeding trough for animals.โตโท

Although the setting was humble, the announcement was glorious. In a nearby field, an angel appeared to a group of shepherds, who were considered lowly in society. The angel declared, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord”.โตโธ Suddenly, the sky was filled with a host of angels praising God. The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to see the newborn King and then went out and told everyone the amazing news.โตโน Later, wise men from the East followed a special star to find Jesus, bringing Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrhโ€”gifts fit for a king.โถยน

The deep meaning of Christmas is the Incarnationโ€”the incredible truth that God became a human being in Jesus. He left the glory of heaven to be born as a helpless baby, to live among us, to feel what we feel, and to rescue us. Jesus is “Immanuel,” a name which means “God with us”.ยนโต

Easter: Celebrating God’s Victory

Easter is the most important and holiest day of the Christian year.โถยณ It celebrates the

resurrection of Jesus Christโ€”the moment He rose from the dead, conquering sin and death forever.

The week leading up to Easter, called Holy Week, remembers the final events of Jesusโ€™s life. It begins with Palm Sunday, when Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey while crowds cheered and waved palm branches.โถโต On

Maundy Thursday, Jesus shared the Last Supper with His disciples, giving them bread and wine as symbols of His body and blood that would be given for them.โถโถ On

Good Friday, Jesus was arrested, put on trial, and crucified. He died on the cross and was buried in a tomb.โถโต

It seemed like a tragic end, but the story was far from over. On the third day, Easter Sunday, some of Jesusโ€™s women followers went to the tomb and found the massive stone rolled away and the tomb empty! An angel told them that Jesus was not there; He had risen from the dead.โถโต Over the next 40 days, Jesus appeared to hundreds of His followers, proving that He was alive.โถโด

Easter is the ultimate celebration of victory. Jesusโ€™s resurrection is the proof that Godโ€™s love and life are more powerful than hatred and death. Because He rose, Christians have their sins forgiven and are offered the gift of a new life now and eternal life with God in the future.โถโน

These two holidays, Christmas and Easter, are more than just traditions with trees and eggs. They are the bookends of the Gospel story. Every year, by celebrating Jesusโ€™s birth and His resurrection, Christians retell the core message of their faith: God loved the world so much that He came to be with us, and He was powerful enough to defeat death for us.

What Do Christian Symbols Like the Cross, the Fish, and the Dove Mean?

From the earliest days of the faith, Christians have used simple pictures and symbols to express deep truths about God. These symbols are like visual reminders of the big ideas in Godโ€™s story. Three of the most ancient and meaningful symbols are the cross, the fish, and the dove.

The Cross

The cross is the most universally recognized symbol of Christianity. Today, it is seen as a symbol of faith and hope, but in the ancient world, it was a brutal instrument of execution used by the Roman Empire.โทยณ It represented pain, shame, and death.

For Christians, the cross was transformed by what happened on it. It reminds us of Jesus’s crucifixion, the moment He made the ultimate sacrifice out of love for us, taking our sins upon Himself.โทโด Because of Jesus, the cross is no longer a symbol of defeat. It is a symbol of Godโ€™s incredible love, His complete forgiveness, and His ultimate victory over sin and death.ยฒโท It is a reminder that God can take the worst thing in the world and turn it into the very thing that saves the world.

The Fish (Ichthys)

You may have seen a simple, two-lined drawing of a fish on a car bumper or a necklace. This is an ancient Christian symbol called the Ichthys (pronounced ik-thoos), which is the Greek word for fish.โทโท

In the first few centuries after Jesus, Christians were often persecuted by the Roman authorities. During these dangerous times, they used the fish as a secret sign to identify one another safely. One story says that when two strangers met, one might draw a single arc in the dirt. If the other person was also a Christian, they would complete the fish by drawing the second arc, and both would know they were in friendly company.โทโท

But the symbol had an even deeper meaning. The letters of the Greek word ICHTHYS form an acrostic, where each letter stands for a word in a powerful statement of faith 78:

  • I โ€“ Iesous (Jesus)
  • CH โ€“ Christos (Christ)
  • TH โ€“ Theou (of God)
  • Y โ€“ Yios (Son)
  • S โ€“ Soter (Savior)

Put together, it means, “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Savior.” This simple fish was a secret code, a confession of faith, and a summary of the Gospel all in one.

The Dove

The dove is a beautiful symbol of peace and of the Holy Spirit.โธยน Its meaning in Christianity is rooted in two key Bible stories.

In the Old Testament story of Noahโ€™s Ark, after the great flood, Noah sent out a dove to see if the waters had receded. The dove eventually returned with a freshly picked olive leaf in its beak, signaling that the flood was over and a new beginning for life on earth was possible. Since then, the dove with an olive branch has been a universal symbol of peace and hope.โธยฒ

Even more importantly, in the New Testament, when Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the Bible says the heavens opened and the Holy Spirit descended on Him “in bodily form like a dove”.โธยน This moment marked the beginning of Jesusโ€™s public ministry. For Christians, the dove is a reminder of Godโ€™s gentle, peaceful presence through His Holy Spirit, who lives in believers to guide, comfort, and empower them.โธโด

These symbols share a powerful, hidden theme that mirrors the Gospel itself: redemption. God took a horrific instrument of torture (the cross), a common food source (the fish), and an ordinary bird (the dove) and transformed them into powerful, holy symbols of His love, identity, and presence. This is exactly what God does in our lives. He takes our ordinary, sometimes broken, lives and, through Jesus, fills them with holy meaning and purpose.

Conclusion: Your Part in the Story

We have journeyed through some of the biggest questions about the Christian faithโ€”from the nature of God and the story of the Bible to the global family of believers and the symbols that bring faith to life. These are more than just facts and statistics; they are pieces of the greatest story ever told. It is a story of a perfect world, a tragic fall, a long-awaited promise, and a heroic rescue.

Most importantly, it is a story that is still being written, and you are invited to be a part of it. Knowing these things about Christianity is not the end of the journey; it is the beginning of a lifelong adventure of knowing and loving God. He is not looking for people who have all the answers, but for people who have a heart open to Him.

So, keep asking questions. Talk to your parents, your pastor, or a trusted Christian friend about the things you wonder about. Read the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to help you understand it. And most of all, look for God at work in your own life and in the world around you. This great story of faith is not just about events that happened long ago; it is about a living God who loves you, who wants to have a relationship with you, and who has a wonderful purpose for your life.

Let’s close with a prayer you can make your own:

Dear God, thank you for this amazing story of your love. Thank you for creating the world, for sending Jesus to rescue me, and for inviting me to be part of your family. Please help my faith to grow as I learn more about you. Open my heart to see you and my ears to hear you. Guide me, strengthen me, and fill me with your peace. Amen.
