Japanese “I will love thee, O LORD, my strength” is a whole prayer of love to God in one line, the first verse of Psalm 18. In plainer words: “Father, you loved me before I ever loved you, and nothing can separate me from your love in Christ. I love you. Teach me to love you more. Amen.”
Prayers about God’s love go in two directions. Some thank God for loving us. Others answer that love by telling God we love him, as the first commandment asks: “thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” (Mark 12:30). The churches have old prayers of both kinds, and anyone can pray short ones of their own.

Augustine of Hippo was baptized in 387 after years away from the faith. His Confessions, written as one long prayer to God, open with the line “Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee.” In Book 10 he looks back on the years he spent looking for God everywhere but in God himself. This is E. B. Pusey’s nineteenth-century translation.

Paul’s prayer to know the love of Christ
Paul prayed this for the church at Ephesus. It can be prayed for oneself or for someone else.
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Is God’s love unconditional?
The word “unconditional” does not appear in the King James Bible, but the idea behind it does. God’s love comes first and is not earned: “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins” (1 John 4:10). Christ died for people “while we were yet sinners” (Romans 5:8), and God saved “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy” (Titus 3:5). Romans 8 says nothing in creation can separate believers from that love.
Scripture also joins God’s love to a response. Jesus told his disciples, “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love” (John 15:10), and Hebrews says, “whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth” (Hebrews 12:6). Christians read these passages together: God loves people before they change, and his love does not leave them as they were. The Bible verses about God’s unconditional love gather more of these passages.
