  • Short prayers thank God for his love when a person feels undeserving, in the morning, for the cross, after coming back to faith, in loss and when that love cannot be felt.
  • Prayers of love to God start from Peter’s answer to Jesus, “Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee” (John 21:17), and from Mark 12:30.
  • Traditional prayers are quoted from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer (Sixth Sunday after Trinity), the Act of Charity in the 1888 Catholic Manual of Prayers, and Augustine’s Confessions, Book 10.
  • The word “unconditional” is not in the King James Bible, but 1 John 4:10, Romans 5:8 and Titus 3:5 teach that God’s love comes first and is not earned.
  • Jesus also tied remaining in his love to keeping his commandments (John 15:10), and Hebrews 12:6 says the Lord disciplines those he loves.

“I will love thee, O LORD, my strength” is a whole prayer of love to God in one line, the first verse of Psalm 18.
