Prayers for Evil People: For Protection, a Change of Heart and Justice

  • Jesus told his followers to “pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you” (Matthew 5:44), and prayed for his executioners from the cross (Luke 23:34).
  • The Psalms also ask God for protection from “the evil man” (Psalm 140:1) and for “the wickedness of the wicked” to “come to an end” (Psalm 7:9).
  • Short prayers cover someone who means harm, a plot, children and home, a change of heart, evil leaders, a cruel boss, the victims, the wish for revenge and justice.
  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer’s Litany asks God “to forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts” (p. 57).
  • Anyone in danger should call 911 (US) or 999 (UK); the US National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233.

Christians pray two things about an evil person: that God will stop the harm, and that God will change the heart. A short prayer that asks both: “Lord, stop what [name] is planning, keep me and my family from harm, and turn [his or her] heart back to you.
