Prayers for Your Son to Find a Job: From the Search to His First Week

  • Eleven short prayers follow a son’s job search: where to look, his résumé, an interview or hiring test, the people who decide, self-doubt, rejection, worry, finding the right job, money while he waits, being hired and his first weeks at work.
  • A parent’s own prayer asks for patience and for the sense to know when to help and when to step back.
  • The 1928 Book of Common Prayer has a prayer “For Every Man in his Work” (p. 44); its catechism teaches the duty “to learn and labour truly to earn mine own living” (p. 289).
  • The Orthodox First Hour includes Psalm 90, which ends with the prayer “prosper thou the work of our hands upon us.”
  • Russian Orthodox Christians often ask Saint Spyridon of Trimythous to pray for help with work, a popular devotion; Catholics ask Saint Joseph, whose feast as Joseph the Worker Pius XII set on 1 May in 1955. Most Protestants pray to God alone.

“Lord, you know my son’s gifts and what he needs. Lead him to good, honest work where he will be treated fairly. Give him courage for every application and interview, and give me patience while we wait. Amen.” A parent can pray this for a son of any age who is looking for work.
