Summary
- Tim Keller was a Presbyterian pastor, born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in 1950, who moved to Manhattan in 1989 to start Redeemer Presbyterian Church after almost everyone told him it was a fool’s errand.
- He came to faith as a religion student at Bucknell University around the spring of 1970, after reading C. S. Lewis on pride.
- He learned to be a pastor over nine years in Hopewell, Virginia, from a blue-collar congregation that loved him through his mistakes.
- Redeemer grew from 15 people praying in an apartment to more than 5,300 at eight services by 2016.
- The Reason for God made him widely known in 2008, and his family counts 31 books in all.
- Fellow Reformed Presbyterians questioned him in 2013, Princeton Seminary withdrew a prize in 2017 over ordination, and a writer who still admired him said in 2022 that his winsome approach had had its moment.
- He was told he had pancreatic cancer in 2020, and he died at home in New York on May 19, 2023, at 72, after praying to be sent home.
