Saint Magdalene of Canossa

Magdalene of Canossa grew up in her noble family's palace in Verona, fatherless at five and left by her mother two years later, and she twice tried the Carmelite life before she was judged unsuited to the cloister. In 1799 she took two homeless girls in from the street, and in 1804 Napoleon, a guest in the Canossa palace, gave her a former convent, where the first house of her Daughters of Charity began, teaching girls, giving catechism and caring for the sick. She died on 10 April 1835 with her sisters holding her upright to pray three Hail Marys to Our Lady of Sorrows, and John Paul II canonised her in 1988.
