Saint Paisios of Mount Athos

- Patron of
Paisios was born Arsenios at Pharasa in Cappadocia in 1924 and baptised by Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia, and in Greece he became a carpenter and an army radio operator. Prayer, he said later, was like the radio contact of those days: “The more we pray, the more we feel secure, on a spiritual basis, of course.” He went to Mount Athos in 1953 and lived most of his life there as a monk, and so many people came to his cell at Panagouda that markers were set up to show them the way. He bore his last illness, a cancer, without complaint and died in 1994; in 2015 the Ecumenical Patriarchate numbered him among the saints.
