John of God was born in Portugal and spent his youth as a shepherd, a soldier and a seller of religious books, until the preaching of John of Avila at Granada moved him to give away all he had and go through the streets calling on God for mercy, so that people took him for a madman. He rented a house in Granada for the sick and poor, searched the city for them and carried on his shoulders those who could not walk, and the companions who joined him became the Brothers Hospitallers. He died at Granada in 1550 after trying to save a young man from drowning, and Leo XIII made him patron of hospitals and the dying.
