Short prayers cover a grandson’s protection, his own faith, wisdom and friends, the teenage years, health, sickness, school and his future, drifting from God, and a new grandson or great-grandson.
The 1928 Book of Common Prayer has a family prayer “For a Birthday” that asks God to “watch over thy child, O Lord, as his days increase.”
Jacob blessed his grandsons Ephraim and Manasseh (Genesis 48:15–16), and Paul traced Timothy’s faith to “thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice” (2 Timothy 1:5).
Catholic and Orthodox Christians honor Joachim and Anne, named in the second-century Gospel of James, as the grandparents of Jesus; the Catholic World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly falls on the fourth Sunday of July.
Prayer for a sick grandson goes alongside his doctors’ care and never replaces it.
