Finding Joyful Entertainment: A Christian Look at How Jehovah’s Witnesses Choose What to Watch and Enjoy

So, Can Jehovah’s Witnesses Enjoy TV and Entertainment?

Let’s get right to the heart of it! Can Jehovah’s Witnesses watch TV and enjoy entertainment? The answer is a definite yes! Absolutely, they can and they do enjoy watching television and many other kinds of fun and recreation.³ God didn’t design life to be dull or boring! They understand the blessing of good, clean fun and they absolutely make time for it.³ Just like you and me, you’ll find them enjoying uplifting music, watching interesting programs, playing sports, getting together with and enjoying their hobbies.³

But here’s the key, friend: they enjoy it selectively. Their choices flow from a deep desire to please their Heavenly Father, Jehovah God, and to live by the good standards we find in the Bible.³ They’re encouraged to be “very careful not to displease our God Jehovah in all we do,” and that includes how they relax and have fun.³ Think about it – as Christians, we naturally want to be choosy about what we let into our minds and hearts, not just going along with whatever’s popular, right?⁵

Something interesting is that their main church leadership doesn’t hand out a big list of forbidden movies, songs, or books.⁶ Instead of strict rules coming down from the top, they focus on helping each person learn Bible principles and train their own conscience to decide what’s good and right for them.⁶ It’s about empowering each person to make godly choices.

And, of course, it’s all about balance. Recreation is a good and necessary gift from God, meant to refresh us, not take over our lives.² They’re reminded not to get so caught up in entertainment that it pushes aside the truly important things, like praying, studying the Bible, going to meetings, and sharing their faith.² The goal is to keep leisure in its proper, helpful place, making them stronger, not weaker, in their service to God.

How Do They Decide? Practical Steps for Wise Choices

Okay, knowing the beautiful Bible principles is wonderful how do you actually apply them to all the movies, music, and shows out there? How does a Jehovah’s Witness put these principles into action day-to-day? They’re encouraged to be thoughtful, using a simple approach often summed up by asking: “What, When, and Who?”1 This method allows individuals to filter their entertainment choices through a spiritual lens. By considering a ‘Überblick über die King-James-Bibel‘, they evaluate whether the content aligns with their values and beliefs. Ultimately, this thoughtful reflection helps them cultivate a lifestyle that is in harmony with their faith. Additionally, Jehovah’s Witnesses may also consider the historical context of the media they’re consuming, reflecting on how the ‘New World Translation origins‘ influence their understanding of biblical principles. This critical perspective not only enhances their discernment but also strengthens their personal faith. By consistently applying these principles, they strive to create a positive environment that nurtures their spiritual growth.

What? (The Quality and Nature of the Entertainment):

This is all about looking closely at the content itself.¹ Does it have the kind of stuff the Bible warns against, like violence, immorality, or spiritism? Does it line up with those positive qualities in Philippians 4:8? Witnesses are advised to do a little homework before diving in:

  • Check out movie trailers, read reviews, or use websites that give details about things like sex, violence, and language.⁵ If a trailer looks questionable, the advice is straightforward: just don’t watch the movie.⁵ Simple as that!
  • For books, reading the back cover or flipping through some pages can give you a heads-up about potentially harmful material before you even buy it.⁵
  • It’s about being honest with yourself about the main ingredients of the recreation. If those ingredients are good in God’s eyes, the activity could be a real blessing.¹

When? (The Quantity and Timing of Recreation):

This step is about thinking about how much time something will take and if that’s a wise use of time.¹ time is precious! We want to use it well, putting spiritual things first.¹⁶ Key questions are:

  • Will this activity get in the way of my personal Bible study worship time, going to meetings, or sharing my faith?¹
  • Will this recreation truly refresh me and give me energy to keep serving God, or will it just eat up valuable time and leave me drained?¹ They’re reminded not to spend so much time on fun that there’s hardly any left for the most important things.³

Who? (The Company and Associates Involved):

Who you spend your fun time with really matters!1 That principle, “Bad associations spoil useful habits” (1 Corinthians 15:33), applies here too.¹⁷ Witnesses are encouraged to ask:

  • Are the people I’m with a good influence? Do they share my love for God and His standards?¹
  • Will hanging out with them help me put God’s Kingdom first and stay close to Jehovah?¹
  • This naturally encourages choosing friends from among fellow believers who are trying to live by the same godly standards.¹⁷ This connects fun choices directly to the bigger picture of sticking close to their faith community, building strong bonds, and staying in a spiritually safe place.¹

Beyond these thoughtful steps, Witnesses are also told to listen to that inner voice, their conscience, während they’re doing something. If a movie starts feeling wrong, or a book takes a bad turn, the advice is to stop right then and there – even if it means leaving the theater or putting the book down.⁵ That shows real commitment to protecting their relationship with God above anything else.

And remember, as we mentioned, parents have a role in guiding these choices in their own homes, maybe setting some specific boundaries based on these principles.⁶ So, it’s a mix of these big Bible principles, practical tools like “What, When, Who,” doing your homework beforehand, listening to your conscience in the moment, and family guidance that helps Jehovah’s Witnesses navigate their entertainment choices wisely.

When you apply these principles, you start to see how they look at different kinds of entertainment:

Movies & TV:

The big things to watch out for are graphic sex and violence, themes involving spirits or the occult, bad language, and stories that promote ideas that go against Bible standards.³ Movie ratings can give some clues Witnesses are reminded that ratings can change and might allow questionable stuff even in lower categories.³ So, personal judgment is still key, and walking out if a movie turns bad is seen as the right thing to do.⁵ As a positive alternative, their organization produces its own videos and programs through JW Broadcasting®, offering content that lines up perfectly with their beliefs.²â°

Musik:

The same guidelines apply here. Music with lyrics that tear down morals, talk explicitly about sex or violence, or have graphic videos is avoided.³ Even the fühlst of the music is considered – does the beat encourage wrong behavior or worldly thinking?⁵ Some reports suggest certain music styles, like some kinds of rap, are generally discouraged.²² Their organization also produces its own beautiful music, called “Kingdom Songs,” which they use in worship and are encouraged to listen to personally.³ Music videos need the same careful eye as movies because of what they might show.¹⁹

Bücher:

Again, the focus is on avoiding sexually explicit content, spiritistic themes, or values that clash with Bible teachings.⁵ Checking covers and flipping through pages first is a good idea.⁵ Some suggest older classic books might be safer choices than some modern stories.⁵ Of course, the main reading for Witnesses is the Bible itself and the publications from their Watch Tower Society, like Der Wachtturm und Erwachet! magazines.⁹

Video Games:

The principles against violence, immorality, and spiritism apply to video games too.⁷ A key question is: Does the game make me act out or pretend to do violent or immoral things? That would clash with principles like Psalm 11:5 (hating violence).¹²

Sports:

Getting exercise is seen as a good thing! The Bible even says “bodily training is beneficial for a little”.¹â° But that’s balanced against the much greater importance of “godly devotion” (1 Timothy 4:7, 8).¹â° Concerns can arise about:

  • Danger: Some sports are just seen as too risky, especially for young people.¹â°
  • Competitiveness: That intense “win no matter what” attitude found in many sports isn’t viewed positively.²
  • Associations: Being on school teams or in leagues, especially after school, is often discouraged because of potentially “unwholesome associations” and the time it takes away from spiritual things.¹⁷ Having fun with fellow believers is preferred.¹⁷
  • Glorifying People: Things like being a cheerleader or homecoming queen are discouraged because they seem to involve putting people on a pedestal or giving them too much glory.¹⁷

You see the pattern, right? The same core principles apply across the board. There’s also a clear encouragement towards their own media (JW Broadcasting®, Kingdom Songs, Watch Tower books) and activities done together as a community (fun with fellow believers). This not only gives “safe” options but also makes the community bonds stronger, reducing the need to look outside for things that might be spiritually risky.³ Although the official word is about individual choice based on principles 6, sometimes community feelings and specific warnings can mean certain things (like the Harry Potter books or some music genres, based on what some people report) become widely seen as unacceptable, making the line between a principle and a rule feel a bit blurry in practice.³

Is All Fun Forbidden? The Importance of Wholesome Recreation

With all the warnings about harmful entertainment, you might start to wonder, “Is life as a Jehovah’s Witness just no fun at all?” But that’s not the picture their teachings paint! They believe Jehovah is a “happy God” who wants us to enjoy the life He’s given us.² Good, clean recreation is seen as a positive thing, even a “gift of God” that can refresh us and make life richer.¹

So, what counts as “wholesome recreation”? It’s the kind of fun that genuinely refreshes your spirit, builds you up morally, and fits right in with Bible standards.¹ The focus is on finding joy in ways that bring you closer to God and to others, not ways that pull you away. Here are some examples of the kinds of recreation they encourage:

  • Family Time: Spending good quality time together as a family, sharing meals, talking about the day, or discussing something encouraging from the Bible is highly valued.² That’s where strong bonds are built!
  • Fellowship with Believers: Getting together socially with fellow Witnesses is common and encouraged.² This could be anything from a picnic, playing some appropriate games, or just enjoying good conversation. They advise being thoughtful about the size of the gathering, having good supervision (like mature adults or elders present), and planning activities that will be uplifting for everyone.⁴⁵
  • Enjoying God’s Creation: Things like hiking, camping, or just taking a walk and appreciating the beauty of nature are seen as wonderful ways to relax and think about God’s amazing handiwork.²
  • Spiritual Gatherings: Going to their larger assemblies and conventions isn’t just a spiritual duty; it’s also seen as a joyful time to connect with fellow believers from all over.¹⁷
  • Approved Media: Listening to their Kingdom Songs or watching programs on JW Broadcasting® are offered as spiritually safe and enjoyable ways to relax.³

The key, always, is balance. Recreation is meant to serve a purpose – to refresh and recharge you so you can keep going strong in your main focus: serving Jehovah.² It shouldn’t become the biggest thing in life or crowd out those essential spiritual activities.² This positive encouragement of specific “wholesome” activities, often centered around family and their faith community, gives great alternatives to potentially harmful worldly entertainment. At the same time, by guiding leisure time inward toward group activities, this approach naturally strengthens the social connections within the community and reinforces their unique identity and sense of being separate from the wider culture.²

Who Do You Share Your Time With? Fellowship, and Faith

That question of “Who?” – the friends you choose to spend time with, especially for fun and relaxation – isn’t just a small detail for Jehovah’s Witnesses. It’s a matter of deep spiritual importance!1 That powerful Bible verse, “Bad associations spoil useful habits” (1 Corinthians 15:33), is something they think about often and apply broadly to friendships and social life.¹⁷

Because of this, there’s strong encouragement to choose your closest friends mainly from among your fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses.¹⁷ The thinking is simple and beautiful: those who share your faith, your values, and your spiritual goals are the ones best equipped to lift you up, encourage you, and help you stay strong in your walk with God.¹⁸ They’re urged to look for friends who truly love Jehovah and are actively living for Him.¹⁸

So, what about spending time with people who aren’t Witnesses, sometimes called “people of the world”? While Witnesses obviously interact with non-Witnesses every day – at work, school, in the neighborhood – becoming besten friends or spending a lot of social time with them is generally discouraged.¹⁴ Why the caution? It comes from the belief that different values and lifestyles could have a negative spiritual pull, maybe weakening someone’s faith or tempting them away from godly principles.¹⁸ This reflects how they understand being “in the world no part of it,” based on verses like John 15:19.¹⁷ Being careful about social ties like this is a key way they maintain their group’s unique identity, protect members from what they see as harmful outside influences, and make sure everyone stays aligned with the community’s beliefs and standards.¹⁴

This idea of being selective with friends even applies innerhalb the congregation. Witnesses are advised to be thoughtful about forming super close bonds with fellow members who might be struggling spiritually, maybe not taking Bible principles seriously, or who have a consistently negative attitude.¹⁸ And in very serious cases, where someone is unrepentantly doing wrong, the practice of disfellowshipping (which is like excommunication or shunning) comes into play. The Bible directs them to “stop keeping company” with such individuals.¹⁸ This is a tough instruction, especially if it involves close friends or even family they believe loyalty to Jehovah and keeping the congregation spiritually clean has to come first.¹⁸ They see it as a necessary step to protect the congregation and hopefully motivate the person to change their ways.¹⁸ Some studies looking at the experiences of former members have noted that these strict rules about association can make leaving the group socially very difficult.⁴⁶

But the focus is meant to be positive: choosing good friends – friends who love and serve Jehovah – is seen as a vital way to build your faith, get encouragement, and successfully handle life’s challenges while keeping that precious relationship with God strong.¹⁸ Entertainment choices and friend choices become closely linked, because choosing “wholesome” fun often means doing group-approved activities with fellow believers, which further strengthens the tight-knit, distinct lifestyle centered around their congregation.

Conclusion: Finding Joy That Honors God

As we’ve explored how Jehovah’s Witnesses think about entertainment, some beautiful themes stand out. Yes, they absolutely can, and do, enjoy fun and recreation – TV, movies, music, all sorts of things! But their choices aren’t random. They’re made thoughtfully, seen through the eyes of their faith and a deep desire to make God happy.

Instead of just following a list of “don’ts” from their church leaders, each Witness is encouraged to use their own conscience, trained by the Bible.⁶ That conscience is guided by powerful scriptural principles: truly hating what God hates (especially immorality, violence, and spiritism), filling their minds with things that are pure and good (like Philippians 4:8 describes), protecting their hearts from bad influences, and always thinking about how their choices affect others.⁷

They put these principles into practice by asking those simple but powerful questions: “What, When, and Who?” about any fun activity.¹ The goal is always to find entertainment that truly refreshes the spirit, builds them up, and keeps leisure time in its proper place, balanced with their most important spiritual priorities.² This often leads them to enjoy activities with family or fellow believers and to use the media their own organization produces.⁴ Choosing friends wisely is seen as incredibly important for staying spiritually strong and reinforcing their community’s identity.¹⁴

Feeling concerned about the potential negative side of popular entertainment isn’t something unique to Jehovah’s Witnesses. We saw that early Christian leaders like Tertullian and Augustine also warned about idol worship and immorality in the entertainment of their day, showing that Christians have long been thoughtfully engaging with the culture around them.²⁷

In the end, the Jehovah’s Witness view on entertainment comes down to their commitment to “do all things for God’s glory” (1 Corinthians 10:31).² Their heart’s desire is to find true joy and refreshment in ways that honor Jehovah God, make their relationship with Him stronger, and help them live full, dedicated Christian lives. It’s one specific way that followers of Jesus try to live faithfully and find fulfillment in the midst of all the choices and attractions of our modern world, striving to make choices that line up with what they understand God’s will to be.
