Anthony was baptised Ferdinand in Lisbon, and he became a Franciscan after the bodies of the first Franciscan martyrs were brought back from Morocco, hoping to preach Christ and die for him as they had. God gave him a preacher's and teacher's life instead, in Italy and the south of France, and when he died near Padua at thirty-six a crowd of children carried the news through the city, crying "The holy Father is dead". Gregory IX, who had heard him preach, made him a saint within a year, and ever since Christians have asked his help to find what they have lost.
