Ignatius, who liked to call himself Theophoros, the God-bearer, was the second or third bishop of Antioch, the city where the disciples were first called Christians. Arrested under Trajan, he was taken in chains to Rome to be thrown to the wild beasts, and on the way he wrote seven letters to the churches, the first writings we know to call the Church catholic. He begged the Christians of Rome not to save him: "I am God's wheat and shall be ground by [wild beasts'] teeth so that I may become Christ's pure bread," he wrote.

祝日、2つの暦、そして守護聖人
聖人の祝日とは、教会が礼拝の中でその聖人を記念する毎年恒例の日のことであり、ほとんどの聖人にとってそれは彼らが亡くなった日です。これらはキリスト教の暦の中で最も古い祝日の一部です。4世紀の復活祭とペンテコステ、クリスマスと公現祭に続き、教会が守り始めた次の祝日は使徒や殉教者の祝日でした。
多くの聖人には、西洋教会と正教会が何世紀にもわたって別々に暦を構築してきたため、検索ツールに2つの日付が表示されることがあります。同じ聖人を異なる日に記念することもあります。西洋教会は聖ユダを聖シモンと共に10月28日に記念しますが、正教会は6月19日に記念します。ロシア正教会のように、現在でも古いユリウス暦に従っている正教会もあり、これは現在の暦より13日遅れているため、彼らの12月6日は私たちの12月19日にあたります。そのような場合、検索ツールには両方の日付が表示されます。
