John of Kronstadt was the son of a poor family from Sura in Archangel province, a boy so slow at his lessons that one night he fell to his knees and prayed until, as he wrote, "It was as if a veil had fallen from my eyes". As priest of Saint Andrew's Cathedral in Kronstadt he sat for hours in the hovels of the exiled criminals there, so often came home barefoot that parishioners brought shoes to his wife, and founded a brotherhood to care for the city's poor. He died on 20 December 1908, and millions of Orthodox Christians still ask his prayers.

聖人の祝日とは、教会が礼拝の中でその聖人を記念する毎年恒例の日のことであり、ほとんどの聖人にとってそれは彼らが亡くなった日です。これらはキリスト教の暦の中で最も古い祝日の一部です。4世紀の復活祭とペンテコステ、クリスマスと公現祭に続き、教会が守り始めた次の祝日は使徒や殉教者の祝日でした。

多くの聖人には、西洋教会と正教会が何世紀にもわたって別々に暦を構築してきたため、検索ツールに2つの日付が表示されることがあります。同じ聖人を異なる日に記念することもあります。西洋教会は聖ユダを聖シモンと共に10月28日に記念しますが、正教会は6月19日に記念します。ロシア正教会のように、現在でも古いユリウス暦に従っている正教会もあり、これは現在の暦より13日遅れているため、彼らの12月6日は私たちの12月19日にあたります。そのような場合、検索ツールには両方の日付が表示されます。
