John Maximovitch, born in Kharkiv province in 1896 and baptised Michael, fled the revolution to Yugoslavia, and as bishop of Shanghai from 1934 inspired the building of churches, hospitals and orphanages, prayed constantly, served the daily cycle of services, carried the Holy Gifts to the sick and often walked barefoot even on the coldest days. When the communists came to power in 1949 he led some 5,000 refugees to a camp on the island of Tubabao in the Philippines, and went to Washington and won a change in the law so that they could enter the United States. He served afterwards in Paris and San Francisco, and died in Seattle on 2 July 1966.

多くの聖人には、西洋教会と正教会が何世紀にもわたって別々に暦を構築してきたため、検索ツールに2つの日付が表示されることがあります。同じ聖人を異なる日に記念することもあります。西洋教会は聖ユダを聖シモンと共に10月28日に記念しますが、正教会は6月19日に記念します。ロシア正教会のように、現在でも古いユリウス暦に従っている正教会もあり、これは現在の暦より13日遅れているため、彼らの12月6日は私たちの12月19日にあたります。そのような場合、検索ツールには両方の日付が表示されます。
