Agnes Gonxha was born to an Albanian family in Skopje in 1910, left home at eighteen to become a missionary sister, and taught for nearly twenty years in India before the day in 1946 that she called her "calling within a calling", when Jesus asked her, "Come, be my light." She left her convent to serve the poorest of Calcutta in a white sari with blue piping, and the Missionaries of Charity she founded spread across the world; asked the secret of it, she said simply, "I pray." She died in Calcutta on 5 September 1997, and Pope Francis canonised her in 2016, giving her to all who volunteer as their model of holiness.
