1. When the urge starts

Lord, it is starting, and I am tired and alone with the phone in my hand. Help me put it down now, before I begin arguing with myself. Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41)

A traditional prayer for a clean heart

This collect opens the Order for the Holy Communion in the 1928 Book of Common Prayer. It asks God to cleanse the thoughts of the heart, and it can be prayed alone at any hour.

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Does the Bible mention pornography?

The word is not in the Bible. English borrowed “pornography” from French in 1842, from the Greek pornographos, “depicting prostitutes.” It first meant ancient obscene painting; the modern sense of obscene pictures dates from 1906. Scripture does speak to the thing itself. Jesus places the sin of lust in the heart before any act: Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart (Matthew 5:28). Job’s covenant with his eyes (Job 31:1) applies the same rule to looking. Paul writes that “this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). The Greek word translated “fornication” there is porneia, from the same family of words as pornē, the prostitute of “pornography.”

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (paragraph 2354) defines pornography as removing real or simulated sexual acts from the intimacy of the partners “in order to display them deliberately to third parties.” It teaches that pornography does grave injury to the dignity of everyone involved, “actors, vendors, the public,” and calls it “a grave offense.” A Catholic can bring it to the sacrament of confession.

How does prayer help someone stop watching pornography?

In Scripture prayer comes paired with action. Jesus told his disciples to “watch and pray” (Matthew 26:41), and Paul’s instruction to Timothy is to “flee also youthful lusts” and to follow righteousness “with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22). Prayer brings the habit into the open before God (1 John 1:9). James 5:16 adds confession to another person, and that is where accountability, filters and counseling come in.

Prayer can also name what lies underneath. The World Health Organization’s ICD-11 lists “compulsive sexual behaviour disorder” (code 6C72), which can show itself in pornography use among other behaviors, and notes that people with it often turn to sexual behavior in response to depression, anxiety, boredom, loneliness or other painful feelings. Those feelings belong in prayer, and in a counselor’s office.

The entry is strict about the diagnosis: a persistent failure to control intense sexual urges, over an extended period such as six months or more, causing marked distress or significant impairment at home, at work or in other important areas of life. It also says that distress coming entirely from moral judgments about sexual behavior is not enough on its own. A Christian who feels guilty after looking at pornography does not, for that reason alone, have a disorder. Someone who has tried many times to stop and cannot, while it damages a marriage, a job or health, should see a licensed clinician as well as keep praying.

1. Prayer for purity of mind and body (Psalm 51:10)
