12 Short Prayers for Nightmares — Before Sleep, in the Dark, and After

  • Twelve short prayers for bad nights, grouped by moment: before sleep, in the dark after waking, and the following morning.
  • They are deliberately short. At three in the morning, “Jesus” is a complete prayer, and no one needs to be articulate at that hour.
  • Each is anchored to a verse easy to hold in the dark — Psalm 4:8, Psalm 121:3, Psalm 139:12, Psalm 127:2, Lamentations 3:22-23.
  • Nightmares are not messages. Scripture gives no dream key and says interpretation belongs to God (Genesis 40:8; Daniel 2:27-28).
  • Bad dreams respond to ordinary things — sleep regularity, less alcohol in the evening. Recurrent nightmares are a recognised symptom after trauma and a side effect of some medications, and both are treatable.
