  • At Pentecost the crowd in Jerusalem heard the disciples “declaring the wonders of God” in their own native languages (Acts 2:6-11).
  • In Acts 10:46 and 19:6, speaking in tongues accompanies the Holy Spirit coming on Gentiles at Caesarea and on about twelve disciples at Ephesus who had received John’s baptism.
  • 1 Corinthians 12:10 lists tongues and the interpretation of tongues as separate gifts, and 12:30 asks “Do all speak in tongues?”
  • In a church meeting Paul allows two or at most three speakers in turn, with interpretation, and silence when no interpreter is present (1 Corinthians 14:27-28).
  • 1 Corinthians 14:39 says “do not forbid speaking in tongues,” and 13:8 says that where there are tongues, “they will be stilled.”

The Bible describes speaking in tongues as speech the Holy Spirit gives. At Pentecost the listeners heard it in their own languages (Acts 2:6), and at Corinth it needed an interpreter (1 Corinthians 14:27-28).
