Summary
- 1010 is not a number in the Bible, but John 10:10 is — and it is almost always quoted in half.
- The whole verse is a contrast: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
- The chapter follows directly from the healing of a man born blind who was interrogated and thrown out. The thief is a description of leaders who take from the flock.
- The Greek perisson means over and above. It is not a promise of comfort — the speaker says three verses later that he will lay down his life.
- Chapter divisions came around 1227 and verse numbers in 1551 and 1555. A reference is the Bible’s index, not its content.
