Summary
- The idea of a breakthrough comes from 2 Samuel 5:20, where David named Baal-perazim after “the breach of waters,” and from Micah 2:13, “The breaker is come up before them.”
- Short prayers cover debt, a long job search, an illness that is not improving, a broken relationship, a habit or addiction, a troubled mind, dry faith, a hard decision, becoming a better person, courage to act and waiting.
- Traditional prayers include the prayer of Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:10), the collect “O God, our refuge and strength” and a prayer “For the gift of Patience” from the 1888 Manual of Prayers.
- Acts records Peter freed from prison while the church prayed, and Paul and Silas freed by an earthquake as they prayed and sang at midnight.
- Scripture also records prayers answered differently: Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” stayed, with the answer “My grace is sufficient for thee.”
